Imperatives: instructions and requests
Əmr forması: göstərişlər və xahişlər
After this lesson you can
- Can give simple instructions and orders using the imperative form.
- Can tell someone not to do something using don't + verb.
- Can make polite requests with please and understand the difference between orders and requests.
Explanation
What is the imperative?
The imperative is used to give instructions, orders, or make requests. In the imperative, we do not use a subject (I, you, he, she). The sentence starts with the base form of the verb.
Positive form
Use the base verb:
- Open the door.
- Sit down, please.
- Listen to me.
Negative form
To tell someone not to do something, use Don't + verb:
- Don't open the window.
- Don't run in the classroom.
- Don't be late.
Polite requests
To make a request more polite, add please:
- Please sit down. or Sit down, please.
- Please help me.
Where do we use imperatives?
- At home: Close the door.
- At school: Open your books.
- On the street: Stop! Turn right.
- In recipes: Add some salt.
Note
In English, the imperative does not include the word **you **, but it always means you (singular or plural). If you write you in the sentence, it is no longer an imperative: You open the door. (You are opening the door.)
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Əmr forması nədir?
Əmr forması (imperative) kiməsə nəsə etməyi əmr etmək, göstəriş vermək və ya xahiş etmək üçün istifadə olunur. Bu formada **mübtəda (I, you, he, she) işlədilmir **. Cümlə birbaşa feilin sadə forması ilə başlayır.
Təsdiq forması
Feilin sadə formasını işlədirik:
- Open the door. (Qapını aç.)
- Sit down, please. (Otur, zəhmət olmasa.)
- Listen to me. (Məni dinlə.)
- Turn left at the bank. (Bankda sola dön.)
Azərbaycan dilində əmr forması feilin kökünə -ın, -in, -un, -ün şəkilçisi ilə düzəlir: açın , oturun , dinləyin. İngilis dilində isə heç bir şəkilçi yoxdur, sadəcə feilin özü işlədilir.
İnkar forması
Bir şeyi etməməyi əmr etmək üçün Don't + feil işlədirik:
- Don't open the window. (Pəncərəni açma.)
- Don't run in the classroom. (Sinifdə qaçma.)
- Don't be late. (Gecikmə.)
Xahişlər
Əmr forması sərt səslənə bilər. Xahişi yumşaltmaq üçün please (zəhmət olmasa) sözünü əlavə edirik:
- Please sit down. və ya Sit down, please.
- Please help me. (Zəhmət olmasa, mənə kömək et.)
Harada istifadə olunur?
- Evdə: Close the door. Turn off the TV.
- Məktəbdə: Open your books. Write your name.
- Küçədə: Stop! Turn right. Don't cross here.
- Yemək reseptlərində: Add some salt. Mix the eggs.
Diqqət edin!
İngilis dilində əmr formasında you sözü yazılmır, amma məna həmişə sənə və ya sizə aiddir. Əgər cümlədə you yazsaq, bu artıq əmr deyil, sadə cümlə olar: You open the door. (Sən qapını açırsan.)
Examples
Open the window, please.
Zəhmət olmasa, pəncərəni aç.
Don't touch the hot pan.
İsti tavaya toxunma.
Please be quiet in the library.
Zəhmət olmasa, kitabxanada səssiz olun.
Turn left at the traffic lights.
İşıqforun yanında sola dön.
Don't forget your homework.
Ev tapşırığını unutma.
Sit down and listen to the teacher.
Otur və müəllimi dinlə.
Please help me with this box.
Zəhmət olmasa, bu qutu ilə mənə kömək et.
Common mistakes
You open the door.
Open the door.
Əmr formasında 'you' işlədilmir. Cümlə birbaşa feillə başlayır. 'You open the door' cümləsi əmr deyil, sadə cümlədir və 'Sən qapını açırsan' mənasını verir.
Not open the window.
Don't open the window.
İnkar əmri üçün 'not' tək işlədilmir, 'don't' (və ya 'do not') lazımdır.
Don't to run.
Don't run.
'Don't' sözündən sonra feil 'to' olmadan gəlir.
Please you sit down.
Please sit down.
Xahişdə də 'you' işlədilmir. 'Please sit down' düzgün formadır.
