Reading: literary and essayistic texts

Oxu: bədii və esseist mətnlər

After this lesson you can

  • Can identify and interpret narrative voice, irony and ambiguity in literary prose.
  • Can trace the argument and rhetorical strategies of an essayistic text.
  • Can distinguish between literal and figurative meaning and explain stylistic effects.

Explanation

What is a literary text?

A literary text (short story, novel, poem, essay) communicates not only through content but through style: word choice, sentence rhythm and imagery. When reading, pay attention to narrative voice (first-person or third-person, omniscient or limited), tone (ironic, nostalgic, detached) and figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification).

Reading an essay

An essay builds an argument. Look for the **thesis **, the evidence and the conclusion. Discourse markers such as however, moreover, on the contrary guide the reader through the argument.

Strategies

  • Identify the overall tone first.
  • Note repeated images and words.
  • Watch for irony: the gap between what is said and what is meant.
  • In essays, label each paragraph's function (introduction, evidence, counter-argument, conclusion).

Bədii mətn nədir?

Bədii mətn (literary text) hekayə, roman, şeir və ya esse ola bilər. Bu cür mətnlərdə yalnız məzmun deyil, necə deyildiyi də vacibdir. Müəllif söz seçimi, cümlə quruluşu və obrazlarla oxucuda müəyyən təsir yaradır.

Hekayəçinin səsi (narrative voice)

Hekayəçi birinci şəxs (**I, we ) və ya üçüncü şəxs ( he, she, they ) ola bilər. Bəzən hekayəçi hər şeyi bilir ( omniscient **), bəzən isə yalnız bir personajın düşüncələrini bilir. Səsin tonu da önəmlidir: **ironik **, **həzin **, laqeyd və s.

Obrazlı dil (figurative language)

Metafora bir şeyi başqa şeylə əvəz edir: The city was a jungle. Müqayisə (simile) like və ya as ilə edilir: Her voice was like silk. Personifikasiya cansız şeylərə insan xüsusiyyətləri verir: The wind whispered.

Esseist mətn

Esse müəllifin fikirlərini arqumentləşdirərək çatdırır. Burada tezis (əsas fikir), dəlillər və nəticə olur. Müəllif tez-tez discourse markers işlədir: however, moreover, on the contrary, in other words. Bu markerlər oxucunu yönləndirir.

Oxu strategiyaları

  • Əvvəlcə mətnin ümumi tonunu müəyyən edin: ciddi, yumoristik, tənqidi?
  • Təkrarlanan obrazları və sözləri qeyd edin.
  • İroniyanı tutmaq üçün deyilənlə və nəzərdə tutulan arasındakı fərqə baxın.
  • Esseist mətndə hər paraqrafın rolunu müəyyən edin: giriş, dəlil, təkzib, nəticə.

Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə

Azərbaycan bədii dilində də obrazlılıq geniş istifadə olunur (ay işığı suya düşmüşdü). Lakin ingilis dilində cümlə quruluşu daha çox dəyişir: qısa cümlələr gərginlik yaradır, uzun cümlələr isə düşüncə axınını göstərir. Məsələn: He stopped. The road was empty. Nothing moved. Burada üç qısa cümlə sakitlik və tənhalıq hissi yaradır.

Examples

  • The old house stood at the end of the lane, its windows like empty eyes.

Köhnə ev xiyabanın sonunda dayanmışdı, pəncərələri boş gözlər kimiydi.

    müqayisə (simile)

  • Her laughter was a sudden burst of sunlight in the grey room.

Onun gülüşü boz otaqda qəfil bir günəş işığı idi.

    metafora

  • The wind whispered through the trees, warning us to leave.

Külək ağacların arasından pıçıldayaraq bizi getməyə çağırırdı.

    personifikasiya

  • He was, as usual, entirely right, and entirely unbearable.

O, həmişəki kimi, tamamilə haqlı və tamamilə dözülməz idi.

    ironiya

  • The essay argues that convenience, far from liberating us, has quietly imprisoned us.

Esse iddia edir ki, rahatlıq bizi azad etmək əvəzinə, sakitcə əsarət altına almışdır.

    esseist arqument

  • In other words, the very tools we celebrate may be the ones that diminish us.

Başqa sözlə, bizim təriflədiyimiz alətlər bizi azaldan alətlər ola bilər.

    discourse marker

  • The narrator never says she is afraid, yet the short, clipped sentences betray her fear.

Hekayəçi heç vaxt qorxduğunu demir, lakin qısa, kəsilmiş cümlələr qorxusunu açıq şəkildə göstərir.

    stilistik təhlil

Reading text: The Quiet Room

The house had been empty for years, but the piano was still there, its keys yellowed like old teeth. Clara ran a finger along the lid and found no dust. That was the first thing that unsettled her: the room was clean. Someone had been playing. She had come to sell the place, to sign the papers and leave before the memories could catch up with her. Yet here she was, standing in the middle of the room, listening to a silence that seemed to have a pulse. Outside, the garden had gone wild, roses climbing over the fence as if trying to escape. Inside, everything was in its place. The metronome on the shelf still ticked, though no one had wound it in a decade. "You always did have a dramatic imagination," her brother had said on the phone. "It's an old house. Old houses make noises." He was, as usual, entirely reasonable, and entirely useless. Reason had never kept their mother from playing at midnight, nor kept Clara awake listening. She opened the piano lid. A single sheet of music lay on the stand, the notes faded but legible. It was a piece their mother had loved, a slow, mournful thing that Clara had refused to learn as a child because it made her cry. Now she sat down, her hands trembling slightly, and played the first bars. The notes rose into the empty room and hung there, unwilling to fade. When she stopped, the silence that followed was not empty. It was full, the way a room is full when someone has just left it. Clara closed the lid gently, as if tucking a child into bed, and walked out without signing anything. The house, she decided, was not hers to sell. It belonged to the music, and to the woman who had played it, and perhaps to the silence that had kept it alive. She drove home with the windows down, the wind loud in her ears, and for the first time in years she did not feel alone. The past, she thought, does not stay where we leave it. It waits, patient as a cat, for us to come back and listen.

Common mistakes

  • The author uses a metaphor when he says the room was like a cage.

The author uses a simile when he says the room was like a cage.

**like** və ya **as** işlədildikdə bu **simile** (müqayisə)dir, metafora deyil. Metaforada birbaşa bərabərlik olur: *The room was a cage.*

  • I think the text is about that the author is sad.

I think the text conveys the author's sadness.

İngilis dilində 'about that' quruluşu səhvdir. Daha təbii ifadə: **conveys the author's sadness** və ya **is about the author's sadness**.

  • The narrator is the same like the author.

The narrator is not necessarily the same as the author.

Hekayəçi ilə müəllif həmişə eyni deyil. 'the same like' yox, **the same as** işlənir.

  • The essay tells that technology is bad.

The essay argues that technology is harmful.

Esseist mətndə müəllif **argues**, **claims**, **contends** kimi fellərlə fikir irəli sürür; 'tells that' akademik üslubda zəifdir.

  • This sentence gives a strong feeling.

This sentence creates a strong impression.

Bədii təhlildə **creates an impression** və ya **evokes a feeling** daha dəqiq və təbii ifadələrdir.
