Reading: exam strategies

Oxu: imtahan strategiyaları

After this lesson you can

  • Can skim a B2 text quickly to identify its main idea and structure.
  • Can scan for specific details and locate paraphrased information.
  • Can recognise distractors in multiple-choice and true/false questions.
  • Can manage time effectively in a reading exam.

Explanation

Start by skimming: read the title, the first sentence of each paragraph and the conclusion to understand the topic and structure. Then read the questions and underline key words such as names, numbers and important nouns. Questions usually follow the order of the text.

Scan for the relevant part and read it carefully. Expect paraphrase: the text may say fell sharply while the question says a significant decrease.

Watch out for distractors: options that repeat words from the text with a different meaning, true information that does not answer the question, or absolute words like always and only. In True/False/Not Given tasks, False means the text says the opposite; Not Given means there is no information. Don't spend too long on one question, and never leave an answer blank.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

1. Əvvəlcə ümumi baxış (skimming)

Mətni sözbəsöz oxumağa tələsməyin. 1-2 dəqiqə ərzində başlığa, abzasların ilk cümlələrinə və sonuncu abzasa baxın. Məqsəd – mövzunu və mətnin quruluşunu anlamaqdır: müəllif nəyi müzakirə edir, fikri nədir?

2. Sualları oxuyun

Sualların açar sözlərini (adlar, rəqəmlər, tarixlər, əsas isimlər) qeyd edin. Suallar adətən mətndəki ardıcıllıqla gəlir – bu, axtarışı asanlaşdırır.

3. Axtarış (scanning)

Açar sözə uyğun hissəni tapın və yalnız o hissəni diqqətlə oxuyun. Lakin yadda saxlayın: imtahanda mətndəki sözlər sualda nadir hallarda eyni ilə təkrarlanır. Onlar parafraz olunur:

  • mətndə: The number of visitors fell sharply
  • sualda: There was a significant decrease in visitors.

4. Distraktorlar (tələ cavablar)

Yanlış variantlar tez-tez:

  • mətndəki eyni sözləri işlədir, amma fərqli məna verir;
  • mətndə olan, amma suala cavab verməyən məlumatı göstərir;
  • həddən artıq ümumi və ya mütləq ifadələr işlədir: always, never, all, only.

True/False/Not Given tipli tapşırıqlarda Not Given – mətndə bu barədə məlumat yoxdur; False – mətn əksini deyir. Öz bilik və fikirlərinizə yox, yalnız mətnə əsaslanın.

5. Vaxt idarəsi

Bir suala ilişib qalmayın. Çətin sualı işarələyin, sonra qayıdın. Boş cavab qoymayın – təxmin ən azı şans verir.

Azərbaycan dilli oxucular üçün

Azərbaycan dilində fel cümlənin sonunda gəlir, ingilis dilində isə subyektdən dərhal sonra. Uzun cümlədə əvvəlcə subyekt və əsas feli tapın – mənanın nüvəsi oradadır. Həmçinin however, although, despite kimi bağlayıcılara diqqət edin: onlar fikrin istiqamətini dəyişir və cavab çox vaxt onlardan sonra gəlir.

Examples

  • Text: 'Sales dropped by half.' Question: 'Sales decreased by 50%.'

Mətn: 'Satışlar yarıya düşdü.' Sual: 'Satışlar 50% azaldı.'

Parafraz – eyni məna, fərqli sözlər.

  • Text: 'Few residents supported the plan.' Question: 'Most residents opposed the plan.'

Mətn: 'Az sakin planı dəstəklədi.' Sual: 'Sakinlərin əksəriyyəti plana qarşı çıxdı.'

Diqqət: dəstəkləməmək həmişə qarşı çıxmaq demək deyil.

  • Although the scheme was expensive, it proved very popular.

Layihə baha olsa da, çox populyar oldu.

    Although-dan sonrakı hissə əsas fikirdir.

  • The author suggests that the problem has been exaggerated.

    Müəllif problemin şişirdildiyini ehtimal edir.

  • Not all experts agree with this view.

Bütün mütəxəssislər bu fikirlə razı deyil.

  • The study does not mention the cost of the project.

    Tədqiqatda layihənin dəyəri qeyd olunmur.

    Bu, Not Given cavabının nümunəsidir.

Reading text: Working from Home: The Hidden Costs

When offices around the world closed in 2020, millions of employees discovered that they could do their jobs from their kitchen tables. At first, many described the experience as liberating. Without long commutes, they gained extra hours every week, and surveys suggested that most workers wanted to continue working remotely at least part of the time. However, as the months passed, researchers began to notice less obvious effects. A study of software companies found that, although individual productivity remained stable, teams became less innovative. Employees were still completing their tasks, but they were sharing fewer new ideas. The researchers argued that creativity often depends on informal conversations, the chance meeting by the coffee machine, which are difficult to recreate online. Loneliness is another concern. Younger workers, in particular, reported feeling isolated. Many of them live in small flats, often with flatmates, and lack a quiet place to work. They also miss the opportunity to learn by watching experienced colleagues, something that rarely happens naturally on a video call. Not everyone agrees with this pessimistic picture. Supporters of remote work point out that companies can address these problems with better planning: regular in-person meetings, mentoring programmes and online spaces for casual conversation. They also note that working from home has opened up jobs to people who live far from big cities or who have disabilities that make commuting difficult. What seems clear is that there is no single solution. The most successful organisations appear to be those that ask their employees what they need and remain willing to experiment. The office may not disappear, but its purpose is changing: it is becoming less a place to do individual work and more a place to meet, collaborate and learn.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing an option because it contains the same words as the text.

Choosing an option because it has the same meaning as the text.

Eyni sözlər çox vaxt tələdir; mənanı müqayisə edin.

  • Answering 'False' when the text says nothing about the topic.

Answering 'Not Given' when the text has no information.

False – mətn əksini deyir; Not Given – məlumat yoxdur.

  • Reading every word of the text slowly before looking at the questions.

Skimming the text, reading the questions, then scanning for answers.

Vaxt məhduddur; strateji oxu daha effektivdir.

  • Using your own knowledge to answer a question.

Basing every answer only on what the text says.

Cavab mətnə əsaslanmalıdır, şəxsi bilik və fikrə yox.
