Listening: exam strategies
Dinləmə: imtahan strategiyaları
After this lesson you can
- Can use preparation time to predict the content and type of answers.
- Can follow speakers who correct themselves or change their minds and identify the final answer.
- Can recognise paraphrase and distractors in exam listening tasks.
Explanation
Use the preparation time well: read the context, underline key words, and predict the type of answer (a number, a name, a noun, an adjective).
Speakers often correct themselves or change their minds, which is a classic exam trap. Listen for signals like actually, sorry, I mean, in the end, on second thoughts; the correct answer usually comes after them.
Expect paraphrase: the question may say dislike while the speaker says can't stand. In multiple-choice tasks, all options are often mentioned, but only one answers the question, so listen to the end of the sentence.
Know the English alphabet for spelling (especially E, I, G and J) and the difference between fifteen and fifty. If you miss an answer, move on immediately.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
1. Hazırlıq vaxtı – ən vacib anlar
Audio başlamazdan əvvəl adətən sualları oxumağa vaxt verilir. Bu vaxtı boşa verməyin:
- Kontekstə baxın: kim danışır, harada, nə barədə?
- Açar sözləri qeyd edin.
- Cavabın tipini təxmin edin: rəqəm, tarix, ad, isim, sifət? Məsələn, The tour costs £___ – qiymət olacaq.
2. Fikir dəyişikliyi və düzəlişlər
Danışanlar çox vaxt əvvəl bir şey deyib, sonra onu düzəldirlər. Bu, imtahanın klassik tələsidir:
- The meeting is on Tuesday, oh no, sorry, it's been moved to Thursday.
- I was going to take the train, but in the end I drove.
actually, sorry, I mean, in the end, on second thoughts, but then kimi siqnal sözlərinə qulaq asın – düzgün cavab adətən onlardan sonra gəlir.
3. Parafraz
Oxuda olduğu kimi, dinləmədə də sualdakı sözlər audioda fərqli ifadə olunur:
- sual: What does the woman dislike about her job?
- audio: The thing I can't stand is the paperwork.
4. Distraktorlar
Audioda bütün variantlar adətən xatırlanır, amma yalnız biri suala cavab verir. Bir sözü eşitdiniz deyə dərhal seçməyin – cümlənin sonuna qədər dinləyin.
5. İmla və rəqəmlər
Adlar hərf-hərf deyiləndə ingilis əlifbasının oxunuşunu bilmək vacibdir (A – /eɪ/, E – /iː/, I – /aɪ/). Azərbaycan dilli öyrənənlər E və **I **, G və J hərflərini tez-tez qarışdırır. Rəqəmlərdə fifteen / fifty, thirteen / thirty fərqinə diqqət edin: -teen hissəsi vurğulu və uzundur.
6. Bir cavabı buraxdınızsa
Panikaya düşməyin. Növbəti suala keçin – bir cavabı itirmək, üç cavabı itirməkdən yaxşıdır.
Examples
It starts at half past seven, no, wait, quarter to eight.
Yeddi yarımda başlayır – yox, dayan, səkkizə on beş dəqiqə qalmış.
Düzgün cavab: 7:45.
I thought about studying law, but in the end I chose medicine.
Hüquq oxumağı düşünürdüm, amma sonda tibbi seçdim.
The thing that really annoys me is the noise.
Məni həqiqətən qıcıqlandıran şey səs-küydür.
annoys = dislike (parafraz).
My surname is Guliyev, that's G-U-L-I-Y-E-V.
Soyadım Quliyevdir – G-U-L-I-Y-E-V.
Hərf-hərf deyilir.
Tickets are fifteen pounds, not fifty!
Biletlər əlli yox, on beş funtdur!
Actually, I've changed my mind, I'll have the soup instead.
Əslində fikrimi dəyişdim – əvəzinə şorba alacağam.
Common mistakes
Writing the first answer you hear.
Waiting to check whether the speaker corrects or changes the information.
İlk deyilən məlumat çox vaxt tələdir; danışan sonra düzəliş edə bilər.
Choosing an option because you heard the exact word.
Choosing the option that matches the speaker's meaning.
Bütün variantlar audioda xatırlana bilər; mənaya qulaq asın.
Writing 'Ilmar' when the speaker spells E-L-M-A-R.
Learning the English names of letters: E = /iː/, I = /aɪ/.
Azərbaycan dilli öyrənənlər E və I hərflərinin ingiliscə adlarını qarışdırır.
Stopping to think about a missed answer.
Moving on to the next question immediately.
Audio dayanmır; bir sualda ilişsəniz, növbətiləri də itirəcəksiniz.
