Listening: discussions and debates

Dinləmə: müzakirələr və debatlar

After this lesson you can

  • Can follow a discussion between two speakers and identify each speaker's opinion
  • Can recognise signals of agreement, partial agreement and disagreement
  • Can notice when a speaker changes their mind or makes a concession

Explanation

In discussions, speakers interrupt, soften their views and sometimes change their minds.

Agreement: Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. That's a good point. Partial agreement: I see what you mean, but... To some extent... Fair enough, however... Disagreement (often polite): I'm not so sure about that. I take your point, but... With respect... The main idea usually follows but. Changing mind / conceding: OK, you've convinced me. I hadn't thought of it that way. Granted, ...

Exam distractors: a speaker mentions one idea and then rejects it. Read questions first, note each speaker's position, and listen to intonation.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Müzakirəni dinləməyin çətinliyi

Müzakirədə danışanlar bir-birinin sözünü kəsir, fikirlərini yumşaldır və bəzən söhbət ərzində fikirlərini dəyişirlər. İmtahan sualları çox vaxt soruşur: Who thinks that...?, What do the speakers agree about?, How does the woman feel about...?

1. Razılaşma siqnalları

  • Tam: Absolutely. / Exactly. / I couldn't agree more. / That's a good point.
  • Qismən: I see what you mean, but... / To some extent, yes. / That's true, but... / Fair enough, however...

2. Etiraz siqnalları

İngilis dilində etiraz çox vaxt yumşaq olur və bu, azərbaycanlı dinləyicini çaşdıra bilər:

  • I'm not so sure about that. = Razı deyiləm.
  • I take your point, but... = Fikrini başa düşürəm, amma razı deyiləm.
  • Really? I'd have thought... = Mən başqa cür düşünürəm.
  • With respect, ... = Hörmətlə, amma tam əksinə.

Diqqət: That's a good point, but... ilə başlayan cümlədə əsas fikir but-dan sonradır.

3. Güzəşt və fikir dəyişikliyi

  • OK, you've convinced me. / I hadn't thought of it that way. / Maybe you're right.
  • Güzəşt (concession): I admit that... / Granted, ...

4. Tələlər (distractors)

İmtahanlarda danışan bir variantı əvvəlcə deyir, sonra rədd edir: At first I thought it was too expensive, but actually..., cavab ikinci hissədir.

5. Strategiya

  • Dinləmədən əvvəl sualları oxuyun və açar sözləri qeyd edin.
  • Hər danışanın adını və fikrini qısa qeydlə yazın: A: +, B: –.
  • İntonasiyaya diqqət yetirin: Rea-lly? yüksələn tonla təəccüb və ya şübhə bildirir.

Examples

  • I take your point, but I still think it's too risky.

Fikrini başa düşürəm, amma yenə də bunun çox riskli olduğunu düşünürəm.

    yumşaq etiraz

  • I couldn't agree more.

    Tamamilə razıyam.

  • That's true to some extent, but it isn't the whole story.

Bu, müəyyən dərəcədə doğrudur, amma məsələ bununla bitmir.

  • I hadn't thought of it that way. Maybe you're right.

Bu barədə belə düşünməmişdim. Bəlkə də haqlısan.

  • Granted, it's expensive, but it'll save us money in the long run.

Razıyam, bahadır, amma uzun müddətdə bizə qənaət edəcək.

  • With respect, I don't think the figures support that.

    Hörmətlə, məncə, rəqəmlər bunu təsdiqləmir.

Common mistakes

  • Hearing 'That's a good point' and deciding the speaker agrees.

Listening to what comes after 'but' to find the speaker's real view.

'That's a good point, but...' çox vaxt nəzakətli etirazdır.

  • Choosing the first option a speaker mentions.

Waiting to hear whether the speaker rejects or changes that option.

Danışanlar tez-tez ilk fikirlərini sonra dəyişirlər, bu, tipik imtahan tələsidir.

  • I am agree with you.

    I agree with you.

agree feildir, 'am' lazım deyil, azərbaycanlıların ən geniş yayılmış səhvi.
