Listening: lectures and podcasts

Dinləmə: mühazirələr və podkastlar

After this lesson you can

  • Can follow the structure and signposting of an academic lecture and identify its main argument.
  • Can distinguish between factual claims, hedged opinions and asides in a podcast conversation.
  • Can take useful notes from extended speech and answer inference questions about the speaker's attitude.

Explanation

Why this skill matters

At C1, listening means following the structure of long speech and the speaker's attitude, not just catching words. Lectures and podcasts are ideal practice: one formal, one relaxed.

Lecture signposting

Academic lectures use clear signals:

  • Opening: Today I'd like to focus on..., The aim of this talk is to...
  • Structure: First, ... Second, ... Finally, ...
  • Examples: Take, for instance, ..., A case in point is ...
  • Emphasis: What matters here is ..., The key point is ...
  • Conclusion: To sum up, ..., Where does that leave us?

Podcast register

Podcast speakers often hedge: I suppose, it seems to me, arguably. These show opinion, not fact. They also use asides: Sorry, I've lost my train of thought. These do not change the main point.

Tone and attitude

Tone carries meaning. That's an interesting point can be genuine or ironic. Use the context to decide.

Note-taking tips

  • Write key words, not full sentences.
  • Note signposts: first, however, therefore.
  • Summarise your notes in 30 seconds at the end.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Niyə bu bacarıq vacibdir?

C1 səviyyəsində dinləmə tək sözləri anlamaq deyil, uzun nitqin quruluşunu və danışanın münasibətini izləməkdir. Mühazirələr və podkastlar bunun üçün idealdır: biri rəsmi, digəri sərbəstdir.

Mühazirənin quruluşu

Akademik mühazirədə demək olar ki, həmişə bu işarə sözləri olur:

  • Giriş: Today I'd like to focus on..., The aim of this talk is to...
  • Struktur: First, ... Second, ... Finally, ..., I'll begin by ... and then move on to ...
  • Nümunə: Take, for instance, ..., A case in point is ...
  • Vurğu: What matters here is ..., The key point is ...
  • Yekun: To sum up, ..., So, where does that leave us?

Bu sözləri eşidəndə qeyd aparmaq asanlaşır: hər işarədən sonra bir sətir yazmaq kifayətdir.

Podkastın registri

Podkastlarda danışan tez-tez hedging (yumşaltma) işlədir: I suppose, it seems to me, arguably, more often than not. Bu ifadələr fikri fakt kimi deyil, şəxsi mövqe kimi göstərir. Həmçinin asides (kənar qeydlər) olur: Sorry, I've lost my train of thought, Anyway, where was I? Bunlar əsas fikri pozmur, sadəcə canlı danışıq effektidir.

Ton və münasibət

Sözün özü deyil, ton da məna verir. That's an interesting point cümləsi həm həqiqi maraq, həm də ironiya ola bilər. C1 dinləyicisi kontekstə baxır: əvvəlki cümlə təsdiqdir, yoxsa təkzib?

Qeyd aparma texnikası

  • Sürətlə yazmağa çalışma, açar sözləri yaz.
  • İşarə sözlərini qeyd et: first, however, therefore.
  • Rəqəm və adları eşidəndə qısalt.
  • Sonda 30 saniyə ayırıb qeydləri xülasə et.

Azərbaycan dilində fərq

Azərbaycan dilində mühazirə nitqi daha çox tam cümlələrlə və rəsmi quruluşla gedir. İngilis dilində isə danışan tez-tez cümləni yarımçıq qoyur, ellipsis işlədir: Not sure that's the whole story. Bu, səhv deyil, təbii nitq xüsusiyyətidir.

Examples

  • Today I'd like to focus on the gap between policy and practice.

Bu gün siyasətlə təcrübə arasındakı uçuruma diqqət yetirmək istərdim.

    mühazirənin girişi

  • Take, for instance, the case of urban transport.

    Məsələn, şəhər nəqliyyatı məsələsini götürək.

    nümunə gətirmə

  • What matters here is not the cost but the timing.

Burada vacib olan xərc deyil, vaxtdır.

    vurğu

  • I suppose you could argue that the data is inconclusive.

Güman edirəm ki, məlumatların qəti nəticə vermədiyini iddia etmək olar.

    hedging

  • Sorry, I've lost my train of thought. Where was I?

    Bağışlayın, fikrimi itirdim. Harada qalmışdım?

    podkast asidesi

  • To sum up, the evidence points in one direction.

Yekun olaraq, dəlillər bir istiqaməti göstərir.

    yekun

  • That's an interesting point, though I'm not entirely convinced.

Bu maraqlı fikirdir, baxmayaraq ki, tam əmin deyiləm.

    yumşaq etiraz

  • More often than not, listeners remember the examples, not the theory.

Çox vaxt dinləyicilər nəzəriyyəni deyil, nümunələri yadda saxlayır.

    ümumiləşdirmə

Common mistakes

  • Dinləyərkən hər sözü yazmağa çalışıram.

Write only key words and signposts.

Hər sözü yazmaq diqqəti yayındırır və əsas fikri itirməyə səbəb olur. Açar sözlər kifayətdir.

  • I didn't understand the word, so I stopped listening.

Keep listening; the context will clarify the word.

Bir naməlum sözə görə dayanmaq lazım deyil. Kontekst çox vaxt mənanı açır.

  • I suppose means 'I know for sure'.

I suppose signals a hedged opinion, not certainty.

**I suppose** qətiyyət bildirmir, yumşaq fikirdir. Mühazirədə onu faktla qarışdırmaq olmaz.

  • Podkastda danışanın kənar qeydlərini əsas fikir kimi qeyd edirəm.

Separate asides from the main argument.

**Asides** (kənar qeydlər) əsas tezisi dəyişmir. Onları əsas fikirdən ayrı qeyd etmək lazımdır.

  • I ignore the speaker's tone because only words matter.

Tone and stress change the meaning.

Ton və vurğu mənanı dəyişir. Eyni cümlə ironik və ya səmimi ola bilər.
