Listening: lectures and note-taking
Dinləmə: mühazirələr və qeyd aparmaq
After this lesson you can
- Can follow the structure of a short lecture by recognising signposting language.
- Can take clear notes using abbreviations, symbols and key words.
- Can identify the main points and supporting examples in a talk.
Explanation
Lectures and notes
Lecturers use signposting to show structure:
- Introduce: Today I'm going to talk about...
- Sequence: First... Then... Finally...
- Move on: Moving on to... / Let's now turn to...
- Example: For instance...
- Emphasis: The key point is...
- Conclude: To sum up...
Notes: write key words, numbers and names only. Use symbols (→ ↑ ↓ = e.g. i.e.) and abbreviations (approx., govt, b/c). Put main points on the left and examples underneath. Review your notes soon after the lecture.

Signposting, 'yol nişanları'
Mühazirəçi danışığın quruluşunu xüsusi ifadələrlə göstərir. Bunları tanısanız, hər sözü başa düşməsəniz də, mühazirənin xəritəsini görəcəksiniz.
| Funksiya | İfadələr |
|---|---|
| Mövzunu təqdim etmək | Today I'm going to talk about... / The topic of today's lecture is... |
| Quruluş | First... / Then... / Finally... / I'll divide this into three parts. |
| Yeni hissəyə keçid | Moving on to... / Let's now turn to... / My second point is... |
| Nümunə | For example... / For instance... / Take... as an example. |
| Vacib fikir | The key point is... / It's important to remember that... / What this means is... |
| Ziddiyyət | However... / On the other hand... |
| Nəticə | To sum up... / In conclusion... / So, to recap... |
Qeyd aparmaq
Hər sözü yazmağa çalışmayın, yalnız açar sözləri (isimlər, rəqəmlər, fellər) yazın.
Simvollar: → (səbəb olur), ↑ (artır), ↓ (azalır), = (bərabərdir), ≠ (fərqlidir), + (və), ∴ (deməli), e.g. (məsələn), i.e. (yəni), vs (müqayisədə).
Qısaltmalar: info, govt (government), approx. (approximately), b/c (because), w/ (with), esp. (especially).
Quruluş: Əsas fikri sola, nümunələri bir az içəri yazın:
1. Sleep & memory
- deep sleep → long-term mem.
- e.g. students: 8h vs 5h
Azərbaycanlı dinləyicilər üçün məsləhət
- Azərbaycan dilində yazanda daha sürətli olursunuzsa, qarışıq qeyd (ingiliscə açar sözlər + Azərbaycanca izah) tamamilə normaldır.
- Rəqəmlərə diqqət: thirteen /θɜːˈtiːn/ və thirty /ˈθɜːti/, vurğu fərqlidir.
- Mühazirəçi bir fikri təkrarlayırsa (In other words...), bu adətən vacib fikirdir.
- Mühazirədən sonra 5 dəqiqə ərzində qeydləri tamamlayın, yaddaş tez zəifləyir.
Examples
Today I'm going to talk about how sleep affects memory.
Bu gün yuxunun yaddaşa necə təsir etdiyindən danışacağam.
Moving on to my second point, let's look at diet.
İkinci fikrimə keçərək, gəlin qidalanmaya baxaq.
Take Japan, for instance, where people live longer.
Məsələn, insanların daha uzun yaşadığı Yaponiyanı götürək.
The key point to remember is that habits are hard to change.
Yadda saxlamalı olduğunuz əsas fikir budur ki, vərdişləri dəyişmək çətindir.
So, to sum up, there are three main causes.
Beləliklə, yekunlaşdırsaq, üç əsas səbəb var.
In other words, more screen time means less sleep.
Başqa sözlə, ekran qarşısında çox vaxt az yuxu deməkdir.
Common mistakes
Trying to write every word the lecturer says.
Writing only key words, numbers and names.
Hər sözü yazsanız, növbəti fikri qaçırarsınız.
Writing 30% when the speaker said 'thirteen per cent'.
Listening for word stress: thirTEEN vs THIRty.
-teen rəqəmlərində vurğu sondadır, -ty rəqəmlərində əvvəldə.
Ignoring phrases like 'The key point is...'.
Underlining or starring what comes after emphasis phrases.
Bu ifadələrdən sonra gələn fikir adətən imtahan sualı olur.
Not reviewing notes until the exam.
Reviewing and completing notes on the same day.
Qeydlər tez yenilənməsə, qısaltmaların mənası unudulur.
