Writing: argumentative essays

Yazı: arqumentativ esse

After this lesson you can

  • Can write a well-organised argumentative essay of 250-300 words with a clear position
  • Can present and refute counter-arguments effectively
  • Can use a range of persuasive and linking language appropriate to formal writing

Explanation

An argumentative essay takes a clear position and persuades the reader. Unlike a simple opinion essay, it presents and refutes counter-arguments.

Typical structure: introduction with thesis → argument 1 → argument 2 → counter-argument + refutation → conclusion.

Introduce the other side: It is often argued that... Opponents claim that... Refute it: However, this argument overlooks... While this may be true to some extent... This view fails to take into account... Persuade with evidence: Research shows... According to recent figures... Conclude: For these reasons... Taking everything into account...

State your position in the introduction, support every argument with evidence, and avoid emotional language and very long sentences.

1. Mümkün strukturlar

Model A (ən geniş yayılmış):

  1. Giriş + tezis (mövqeyiniz)
  2. Arqument 1 + sübut
  3. Arqument 2 + sübut
  4. Əks arqument + təkzib (refutation)
  5. Nəticə

Model B (balanslı başlanğıc): əvvəl əks tərəfin fikri, sonra niyə öz mövqeyinizin daha güclü olduğu.

2. Əks arqumenti təqdim etmək

  • It is often argued that ...
  • Opponents of this view claim that ...
  • Some people believe that ...

3. Təkzib etmək (refutation)

  • However, this argument overlooks the fact that ...
  • While this may be true to some extent, ...
  • Although there is some truth in this, ...
  • This view fails to take into account ...

4. İnandırıcı dil

  • Güclü, amma akademik: It is clear that ..., There is no doubt that ..., Undeniably, ...
  • Sübut: Research shows ..., According to recent figures, ...
  • Nəticə: ***For these reasons *, ..., Taking everything into account, ...
  • Həddən artıq emosional ifadələrdən çəkinin: This is a terrible disaster!!!

5. Azərbaycanlıların tipik səhvləri

  • Mövqe yalnız sonda aydın olur, ingilis essesində tezis girişdə olmalıdır.
  • In my opinion I think, təkrar; birini seçin.
  • Hər arqument üçün sübut və ya nümunə vermədən yalnız ümumi fikirlər yazmaq.
  • Çox uzun, vergüllərlə bağlanmış cümlələr. İngilis dilində bir cümlədə bir-iki fikir kifayətdir.

6. Planlaşdırma (5 dəqiqə)

Yazmazdan əvvəl qısa plan qurun: mövqe → 2 arqument → 1 əks arqument + təkzib → nəticə.

Examples

  • It is often argued that school uniforms limit students' self-expression.

Tez-tez iddia edilir ki, məktəb forması şagirdlərin özünüifadəsini məhdudlaşdırır.

  • However, this argument overlooks the fact that uniforms reduce social pressure.

Lakin bu arqument formanın sosial təzyiqi azaltdığı faktını nəzərə almır.

  • While this may be true to some extent, the benefits are far greater.

Bu, müəyyən dərəcədə doğru olsa da, faydaları qat-qat çoxdur.

  • According to recent figures, over 60% of parents support the policy.

Son rəqəmlərə görə, valideynlərin 60%-dən çoxu bu siyasəti dəstəkləyir.

  • Taking everything into account, I firmly believe that the ban should be introduced.

Hər şeyi nəzərə alaraq, qadağanın tətbiq olunmalı olduğuna qəti inanıram.

  • This view fails to take into account the long-term costs.

Bu baxış uzunmüddətli xərcləri nəzərə almır.

Common mistakes

  • In my opinion, I think that smartphones should be banned.

In my opinion, smartphones should be banned in classrooms.

In my opinion və I think eyni mənadır, birlikdə işlətmək təkrardır.

  • Some people say that it is bad. But they are wrong.

Some people argue that it is harmful. However, this view overlooks several important benefits.

Əks arqumenti sadəcə 'wrong' deyə rədd etmək zəifdir; səbəb göstərərək təkzib edin.

  • Everybody knows that this is the worst idea ever!

There is considerable evidence that this approach is ineffective.

Akademik yazıda emosional ifadə və şişirtmə yerinə sübuta əsaslanan dil işlədin.

  • Firstly, ... Secondly, ... Thirdly, ... Fourthly, ... Fifthly, ...

Firstly, ... Furthermore, ... Another key factor is ...

Eyni tip bağlayıcıları mexaniki təkrarlamaq əvəzinə müxtəlif keçid ifadələri işlədin.
