Speaking: discussions and debates

Danışıq: müzakirə və debatlarda iştirak

After this lesson you can

  • Can take part actively in a discussion, expressing and justifying opinions clearly
  • Can interrupt politely, take and hold the floor, and invite others to speak
  • Can concede a point and persuade others while remaining polite

Explanation

Give and justify opinions: As I see it... because... The main reason is that... From my point of view...

Interrupt politely: Sorry to interrupt, but... Can I just come in here? Hold the floor: Hang on, let me just finish. Just one more thing... Involve others: What's your take on this? We haven't heard from you yet.

Concede: Fair enough. You've got a point there. I'll give you that, but... Persuade: Surely you'd agree that...? Look at it this way... Compromise: Why don't we meet halfway?

In a formal debate: state your position, give 2–3 arguments, respond to the other side (rebuttal), and sum up. Avoid I am agree, according to me, and repeating I think.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

1. Fikir bildirmək və əsaslandırmaq

B2-də sadəcə I think... demək kifayət deyil; fikri səbəb və nümunə ilə dəstəkləmək lazımdır.

  • As I see it, ... because ...
  • I'm convinced that ... For example, ...
  • The way I see it, ... The main reason is that ...
  • From my point of view, ... (✗ From my opinion)

2. Sözə qarışmaq (interrupting)

Azərbaycan mədəniyyətində müzakirədə səsi qaldırmaq və ya birbaşa sözə qarışmaq bəzən normal sayılır. İngilisdilli mühitdə isə yumşaq ifadələr gözlənilir:

  • Sorry to interrupt, but ...
  • Can I just come in here?
  • If I could just add something ...

3. Sözü saxlamaq (holding the floor)

Sizi kəsəndə:

  • Hang on, let me just finish.
  • If I could just finish my point ...
  • Just one more thing ...

4. Başqalarını cəlb etmək

  • What's your take on this?
  • Do you agree, Nigar?
  • We haven't heard from you yet, Rauf.

5. Güzəşt və inandırma

  • Güzəşt: Fair enough. / You've got a point there. / I'll give you that, but ...
  • İnandırma: Don't you think that ...? / Surely you'd agree that ...? / Look at it this way: ...
  • Kompromis: Why don't we meet halfway? / What if we ...?

6. Debat strukturu

Rəsmi debatda iki tərəf olur: for (lehinə) və against (əleyhinə). Hər natiq:

  1. mövqeyini bildirir,
  2. 2-3 arqument verir,
  3. rəqibin arqumentinə cavab verir (rebuttal),
  4. yekunlaşdırır.

7. Tipik səhvlər

  • I am agree → I agree
  • I'm not agree → I don't agree / I disagree
  • According to me → In my view / As I see it
  • Monoton, eyni ifadəni təkrarlamaq (I think... I think... I think...).

Examples

  • As I see it, public transport should be free, because it would reduce traffic.

Məncə, ictimai nəqliyyat pulsuz olmalıdır, çünki bu, tıxacı azaldar.

  • Sorry to interrupt, but I think we're forgetting the cost.

Sözünüzü kəsdiyim üçün üzr istəyirəm, amma məncə, xərcləri unuduruq.

  • Hang on, let me just finish my point.

    Bir dəqiqə, qoyun fikrimi bitirim.

  • What's your take on this, Aynur?

Aynur, sən bu barədə nə düşünürsən?

  • I'll give you that, but the long-term benefits are more important.

Bunu qəbul edirəm, amma uzunmüddətli faydalar daha vacibdir.

  • Surely you'd agree that safety comes first?

Yəqin ki, təhlükəsizliyin birinci yerdə olduğu ilə razılaşarsınız?

  • Why don't we meet halfway and try it for one month?

Gəlin ortaq məxrəcə gələk və bir ay sınayaq.

Common mistakes

  • I am agree with you.

    I agree with you.

agree feildir; 'razıyam' tərcüməsinə görə 'am' əlavə etmək səhvdir.

  • According to me, it's a bad idea.

In my view, it's a bad idea. / As I see it, it's a bad idea.

According to başqasının fikrini bildirmək üçündür; özünüz üçün in my view işlədin.

  • From my opinion, we should wait.

In my opinion, we should wait. / From my point of view, we should wait.

Sabit ifadələr: in my opinion, from my point of view.

  • Stop! You are wrong!

Sorry, but I see it differently.

İngilisdilli müzakirədə birbaşa etiraz kobud səslənir; yumşaldıcı ifadələr işlədin.
