Speaking: debating and persuading
Danışıq: müzakirə və inandırma
After this lesson you can
- Can participate effectively in a debate, presenting clear arguments and responding to counterarguments.
- Can use a range of persuasive language (hedging, concession, rhetorical questions) to influence an audience.
- Can structure a persuasive speech with signposting and emphasis.
Explanation
What is a debate?
A debate is a structured discussion where two or more sides present arguments on a topic. The goal is to persuade the audience, not to defeat the opponent. A good debater listens to the other side and responds to their points.
Building an argument
A strong argument has three parts:
- Claim: What you believe. I firmly believe that remote work increases productivity.
- Reason: Why. Because it reduces commuting time.
- Evidence: Facts, examples, statistics. For instance, a recent study showed that remote workers completed tasks 13% faster.
Handling counterarguments
Acknowledge the other side, then rebut:
- Concession: While it is true that some employees miss office interaction, ...
- Rebuttal: ... this can be addressed through regular virtual meetings.
Persuasive language
- Hedging: It could be argued that... makes your point less absolute and more professional.
- Rhetorical questions: Is it not time we reconsidered our priorities?
- Emphatic language: What matters most is...
- Tripling: It is efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.
Signposting
- Introduction: Today I would like to argue that...
- Transitions: Let us now turn to...
- Conclusion: To sum up, ...
Common mistakes
- Not listening to the other side.
- Making claims without evidence.
- Using aggressive language (You are completely wrong).
- Going off-topic.
Məsələn: I firmly believe that remote work increases productivity.
- Səbəb (reason): Niyə? Because it reduces commuting time and allows for flexible schedules.
- Sübut (evidence): Məlumat, nümunə və ya statistika. For instance, a recent study showed that remote workers completed tasks 13% faster.
Etirazların idarə edilməsi (concession and rebuttal)
Qarşı tərəfin fikrini qəbul edib sonra öz fikrinizi əsaslandırmaq güclü strategiyadır:
- Concession: While it is true that some employees miss office interaction, ...
- Rebuttal: ... this can be addressed through regular virtual meetings and occasional team days.
İnandırıcı dil vasitələri
- Hedging (yumşaltma): It could be argued that..., There is a tendency for... Bu, fikri daha az qəti və daha peşəkar edir.
- Rhetorical questions: Is it not time we reconsidered our priorities? Auditoriyanı düşünməyə vadar edir.
- Emphatic language: What matters most is..., The key issue here is... Diqqəti əsas məqama yönəldir.
- Tripling (üçlük): It is efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. Yadda qalanlığı artırır.
Müzakirədə ardıcıllıq (signposting)
- Giriş: Today I would like to argue that...
- Keçid: Let us now turn to..., Having established that, ...
- Nəticə: To sum up, ..., The evidence therefore suggests that...
Azərbaycan dilindəki fərqlər
Azərbaycan dilində müzakirə zamanı tez-tez birbaşa ifadələr işlədilir: Sən səhv edirsən. İngilis dilində isə daha çox yumşaldıcı ifadələr üstünlük təşkil edir: I see your point, but I would argue that... Bu, müzakirəni daha konstruktiv edir.
Ümumi səhvlər
- Qarşı tərəfi dinləməmək və yalnız öz fikrini təkrarlamaq.
- Arqumenti sübutsuz qoymaq.
- Həddindən artıq aqressiv dil işlətmək (You are completely wrong).
- Mövzudan yayınmaq.
Praktik məsləhətlər
- Müzakirədən əvvəl əsas arqumentlərinizi və mümkün etirazları yazın.
- Qısa, aydın cümlələrlə danışın.
- Qarşı tərəfin güclü tərəflərini qəbul edin, sonra zəif tərəflərini göstərin.
- Səs tonunuzu və bədən dilinizi nəzarətdə saxlayın.
Examples
I firmly believe that remote work increases productivity.
Mən qəti şəkildə inanıram ki, distant iş məhsuldarlığı artırır.
İddia (claim) nümunəsi
While it is true that some employees miss office interaction, this can be addressed through regular virtual meetings.
Bəzi işçilərin ofis ünsiyyətini darıxdığı doğru olsa da, bunu müntəzəm virtual görüşlərlə həll etmək olar.
Concession + rebuttal

Prioritetlərimizi yenidən nəzərdən keçirməyin vaxtı deyilmi?
Rhetorical question
What matters most is the well-being of our employees.
Ən vacibi işçilərimizin rifahıdır.
Emphatic structure

Tripling
Let us now turn to the economic implications of this policy.
İndi bu siyasətin iqtisadi nəticələrinə keçək.
Signposting
To sum up, the evidence therefore suggests that remote work is beneficial.
Xülasə, sübutlar göstərir ki, distant iş faydalıdır.
Conclusion
Common mistakes
You are completely wrong.
I see your point, but I would argue that...

Arqument sübut və konkret səbəblərlə dəstəklənməlidir.
On the other hand, I agree with you.
On the one hand, I agree with you; on the other hand, there are some drawbacks.
'On the other hand' qarşı fikri bildirir, eyni fikri deyil.
