Speaking: the long turn
Danışıq: uzun monoloq
After this lesson you can
- Can speak for one to two minutes comparing two pictures or discussing a topic without long pauses.
- Can speculate about people, places and situations using modal verbs and hedging language.
- Can use natural fillers and paraphrase to keep talking when a word is unknown.
Explanation
In many B2 speaking exams you must talk alone for one to two minutes, for example comparing two pictures. Examiners assess fluency, organisation and vocabulary as well as grammar.
A good structure: say what the pictures have in common, describe the differences (whereas, while, unlike), speculate (They might be…, It looks as if…, I'd say…), and, most importantly, answer the question you were given.
Use the Present Continuous to describe what is happening in a picture. To stay fluent, use fillers such as Well, let me think… and paraphrase unknown words: It's a kind of…, It's something you use for…. Avoid long silences and plan to fill the whole time.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Uzun monoloq nədir?
B2 danışıq imtahanlarında tez-tez 1-2 dəqiqə tək danışmaq tələb olunur: iki şəkli müqayisə etmək, bir mövzu kartı üzrə danışmaq və ya sualı genişləndirmək. Qiymətləndirmədə yalnız qrammatika yox, axıcılıq, fikirlərin əlaqəsi və söz ehtiyatı da nəzərə alınır.
Quruluş (şəkil müqayisəsi)
- Ümumi oxşarlıq: Both pictures show people who are...
- Fərqlər: In the first picture..., whereas in the second...
- Ehtimal: They might be..., It looks as if...
- Sualın cavabı – ən vacib hissə! Çox vaxt sual Why...? How do they feel? olur. Yalnız təsvir edib suala cavab verməmək tipik səhvdir.
Ehtimal dili
- She must be a teacher, she's standing in front of a class.
- They might / could be colleagues.
- It looks as if / as though they're celebrating something.
- I'd say the man is about fifty.
- Perhaps / Maybe they've just finished an exam.
- I get the impression that she's quite nervous.
Müqayisə dili
whereas, while, on the other hand, unlike, similarly, both... and, neither... nor, The main difference is that...
Axıcılıq üçün vasitələr
Düşünmək üçün vaxt qazanmaq normaldır – sadəcə susmayın:
- Well, let me think... / That's an interesting question.
- What I mean is... / In other words...
- Sözü bilmirsinizsə, parafraz edin: It's a kind of... / It's something you use for...
Azərbaycan dilli danışanlar üçün
- Danışarkən Azərbaycan dilindəki yəni, şey, bax doldurucularını işlətməyin – ingiliscə well, you know, I mean deyin (amma həddən artıq yox).
- Present Continuous şəkil təsvirinin əsas zamanıdır: A woman is holding a baby, A woman holds a baby yox.
- Monoloqu bir neçə cümlə ilə bitirməyin – hazırlaşın ki, tam vaxtı doldurasınız.
