Writing: reviews and articles

Yazı: rəylər və məqalələr

After this lesson you can

  • Can write an engaging article with an attention-grabbing title and opening.
  • Can write a balanced review that describes, evaluates and recommends.
  • Can use vivid adjectives, rhetorical questions and direct address to engage the reader.

Explanation

Articles and reviews must engage the reader. The style is usually semi-formal, lively and personal.

An article needs a catchy title, a strong opening (a rhetorical question, a surprising fact or a short story), direct address to the reader (Imagine you're…), one main idea per paragraph, and a memorable ending that asks the reader to think or act.

A review introduces the subject, describes it briefly without spoilers, evaluates its strengths and weaknesses with reasons, and ends with a recommendation saying who would enjoy it.

Use precise adjectives instead of good or bad: gripping, predictable, cosy, overpriced, thought-provoking. Use very with ordinary adjectives and absolutely with extreme ones (absolutely stunning). Mix short and long sentences for rhythm.

Məqalə və rəy – oxucunu maraqlandırmaq

Hesabatdan fərqli olaraq, məqalə və rəy oxucunun marağını cəlb etməlidir. Üslub adətən yarımrəsmi, canlı və şəxsidir.

Məqalə (article)

  • Cəlbedici başlıq: Five Reasons to Switch Off Your Phone / Is Homework Really Necessary?
  • Güclü açılış: ritorik sual (Have you ever wondered...?), maraqlı fakt və ya qısa hekayə.
  • Oxucuya birbaşa müraciət: you, your: Imagine you're...
  • Hər abzasda bir əsas fikir, nümunələrlə.
  • Yaddaqalan sonluq: suala qayıtmaq, oxucunu düşünməyə və ya hərəkətə çağırmaq: So why not give it a try?

Rəy (review)

Film, kitab, restoran, tətbiq və s. haqqında:

  1. Giriş – nədən bəhs olunur, əsas məlumat (ad, yer, janr).
  2. Təsvir – qısa məzmun və ya xüsusiyyətlər (filmin sonunu açmadan!).
  3. Qiymətləndirmə – müsbət və mənfi cəhətlər, əsaslandırılmış fikir.
  4. Tövsiyə – kimə uyğundur: I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who... / Fans of ... will love it, but...

Canlı dil

Ümumi sözlər (good, nice, bad) əvəzinə dəqiq sifətlər işlədin:

  • film: gripping, moving, predictable, thought-provoking, slow-paced
  • restoran: cosy, overpriced, mouth-watering, attentive (staff)
  • kitab: compelling, well-written, page-turner

Zərflə gücləndirmə: absolutely stunning, rather disappointing, surprisingly funny. Diqqət: very ilə yalnız adi sifətlər, absolutely ilə ekstremal sifətlər işlənir: absolutely amazing (very amazing yox).

Azərbaycan dilli yazanlar üçün

Azərbaycan dilində məqalələr çox vaxt rəsmi və uzun cümlələrlə yazılır. İngilis jurnal üslubunda isə qısa və uzun cümlələri qarışdırmaq, sual vermək və oxucu ilə «danışmaq» daha təsirlidir. Həmçinin -li, -siz şəkilçili sözləri hərfi tərcümə etməkdən çəkinin: dadlı → tasty / delicious, dadsız → bland / tasteless.

Examples

  • Have you ever wondered why time flies when you're having fun?

Heç düşünmüsünüzmü, niyə əylənəndə vaxt bu qədər tez keçir?

    Ritorik sualla açılış.

  • Imagine waking up without your phone for a whole week.

Bütün bir həftə telefonsuz oyandığınızı təsəvvür edin.

  • The plot is gripping from start to finish.

Süjet əvvəldən axıra qədər insanı özünə bağlayır.

  • Although the acting is superb, the ending felt rather predictable.

Aktyor oyunu əla olsa da, sonluq bir qədər proqnozlaşdırılan idi.

  • The food was absolutely delicious, but the service was painfully slow.

Yemək son dərəcə dadlı idi, amma xidmət dözülməz dərəcədə ləng idi.

  • I'd thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in history.

Bu kitabı tarixlə maraqlanan hər kəsə ürəkdən tövsiyə edərdim.

  • So, why not give it a try? You might be surprised.

Bəs niyə yoxlamayasınız? Bəlkə də təəccüblənəcəksiniz.

    Oxucunu hərəkətə çağıran sonluq.

Common mistakes

  • The film was very amazing.

    The film was absolutely amazing.

Ekstremal sifətlər (amazing, terrible, delicious) very ilə yox, absolutely/really ilə gücləndirilir.

  • In the end, the hero dies and his brother becomes king.

I won't spoil the ending, but it is full of surprises.

Rəydə sonluğu açmaq (spoiler) oxucunun marağını öldürür.

  • The restaurant was good. The food was good. The staff were good.

The restaurant was cosy, the food was mouth-watering and the staff were attentive.

Eyni ümumi sifəti təkrarlamaq əvəzinə dəqiq və rəngarəng sifətlər işlədin.

  • I recommend this film for everybody who like action.

I'd recommend this film to anyone who likes action.

recommend something to someone; anyone/everybody təkdir – likes.
