Pronunciation: intonation and sentence stress
Tələffüz: intonasiya və cümlə vurğusu
After this lesson you can
- Can stress content words and reduce function words to produce natural English rhythm
- Can use contrastive stress to change or correct meaning
- Can use rising and falling intonation for questions, lists, certainty and politeness
Explanation
English is stress-timed: stressed syllables come at regular intervals, and unstressed ones are shortened. Azerbaijani is syllable-timed, so learners often stress every word equally.
Content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs, negatives, question words) are stressed; function words (articles, prepositions, auxiliaries, pronouns) are weak: I WANT to GO to the CINema.
Contrastive stress changes meaning: I didn't take YOUR pen.
Intonation: falling for statements, wh-questions and certainty; rising for yes/no questions and surprise; lists rise until the last item, which falls; fall-rise for hesitation or politeness. Question tags fall when you expect agreement and rise when you really ask. Flat intonation can sound rude or bored.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
1. İngilis dilinin ritmi
Azərbaycan dili **heca ritmlidir **: hər heca təxminən eyni uzunluqda tələffüz olunur. İngilis dili isə vurğu ritmlidir: vurğulu hecalar arasında təxminən bərabər vaxt keçir, vurğusuz hecalar isə qısalır və zəifləyir. Ona görə azərbaycanlıların ingiliscəsi bəzən 'robot kimi' səslənir, hər söz eyni güclə deyilir.
2. Məzmun və funksional sözlər
- Məzmun sözləri (vurğulu): isim, əsas feil, sifət, zərf, inkar (not, never), sual sözləri.
- Funksional sözlər (zəif): artikl, ön qoşma, köməkçi feil, əvəzlik, bağlayıcı.
I want to go to the cinema on Saturday. Burada to /tə/, the /ðə/ kimi zəif deyilir.
3. Kontrastiv vurğu
Vurğunu dəyişməklə mənanı dəyişirik:
- I didn't take your pen. (başqası götürüb)
- I didn't take your pen. (başqasının qələmini götürmüşəm)
- I didn't take your pen. (başqa bir şeyini götürmüşəm) Düzəliş edərkən də işlənir: A: Is it on Tuesday? B: No, it's on Thursday.
4. Əsas intonasiya modelləri
| Model | Nə vaxt | Nümunə |
|---|---|---|
| ↘ enən | xəbər cümləsi, wh-suallar, əminlik | Where do you live↘? |
| ↗ qalxan | yes/no sualları, təəccüb | Are you ready↗? |
| ↗↗↘ siyahı | sonuncudan başqa hamısı qalxır | apples↗, pears↗ and grapes↘ |
| ↘↗ enib-qalxan | tamamlanmamış fikir, nəzakət, şübhə | Well↘↗, I'm not sure... |
5. Sual quyruqları (question tags)
- Enən ton: əminsiniz, təsdiq gözləyirsiniz, It's cold, isn't it↘?
- Qalxan ton: həqiqətən soruşursunuz, You're coming, aren't you↗?
6. Nəzakət
Düz, monoton intonasiya ingilisdilli dinləyiciyə maraqsız və ya kobud kimi gələ bilər. Xahiş və təkliflərdə səs tonunu bir az genişləndirin: Could you help me↗?
Examples
I'd LOVE to COME, but I'm WORKing on SATurday.
Gəlmək çox istərdim, amma şənbə günü işləyirəm.
böyük hərflər, vurğulu hecalar
I didn't say SHE stole the money.
Pulu onun oğurladığını demədim (başqası deyib ki, ...).
kontrastiv vurğu
A: Is the meeting at three? B: No, it's at FOUR.
A: Görüş saat üçdədir? B: Yox, dörddə.
düzəliş
Would you like tea↗ or coffee↘?
Çay istərdiniz, yoxsa qəhvə?
seçim sualı: sonda enən ton
We need eggs↗, milk↗, bread↗ and butter↘.
Bizə yumurta, süd, çörək və kərə yağı lazımdır.
It's a lovely day, isn't it↘?
Gözəl gündür, elə deyil?
təsdiq gözlənilir
Well↘↗, I'm not completely sure.
Hə..., tam əmin deyiləm.
tərəddüd
Common mistakes
Stressing every word equally: I – WANT – TO – GO – TO – THE – SHOP.
I WANT to GO to the SHOP. (to /tə/, the /ðə/ are weak)
Funksional sözlər zəif tələffüz olunur; hər sözü eyni güclə demək qeyri-təbii səslənir.
Using a rising tone at the end of every statement.
Use a falling tone for statements: I live in Baku↘.
Xəbər cümləsində qalxan ton şübhə və ya sual kimi səslənir.
Saying a polite request with a completely flat tone.
Could you HELP me↗? (wider pitch range)
Monoton intonasiya ingilisdilli dinləyicidə kobudluq təəssüratı yarada bilər.
Stressing 'and' and 'the' in a list.
Stress the items: APples, PEARS and GRAPES.
Siyahıda əsas vurğu məzmun sözlərinə düşür.
