Explanation

Connected speech

In natural English, words join together.

  • Linking: consonant + vowel join: turn‿off, pick‿it‿up. Linking /r/, /j/, /w/: far‿away, I‿am, go‿out.
  • Elision: /t/ and /d/ often disappear between consonants: nex(t) week, las(t) night.
  • Assimilation: sounds change: did you → /dɪdʒuː/, don't you → /dəʊntʃuː/.
  • Weak forms: unstressed small words use schwa /ə/: to /tə/, can /kən/, was /wəz/, of /əv/.
  • Informal: gonna, wanna, gotta, would've. Understand them, but don't write them formally.

Stress the content words and reduce the grammar words.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Niyə vacibdir?

Yazıda sözlər ayrı-ayrılıqdadır, amma danışıqda ingilislər onları bir axında deyirlər. Dərslikdə bildiyiniz söz filmdə tanınmaz gəlirsə, səbəb çox vaxt connected speech-dir.

Azərbaycan dilində də bu var: nə edirsən → nəirsən, gələcəyəm → gələjəm. İngiliscədə isə bu proseslər daha sistemlidir.

1. Linking, samit + sait

Sözün sonundakı samit növbəti sözün əvvəlindəki saitə birləşir:

  • turn‿off → /tɜː.nɒf/
  • an‿apple → /ə.næpl/
  • pick‿it‿up → /pɪ.kɪ.tʌp/

2. Linking /r/, /j/, /w/

  • Britaniya ingiliscəsində sözün sonundakı r adətən tələffüz olunmur, amma saitdən əvvəl eşidilir: far‿away /fɑː rəweɪ/, for‿example.
  • İki sait arasında kiçik /j/ və ya /w/ yaranır: I‿am /aɪ jæm/, go‿out /gəʊ waʊt/.

3. Elision, səsin düşməsi

t və d iki samit arasında çox vaxt düşür:

  • next week → /neks wiːk/
  • last night → /lɑːs naɪt/
  • I don't know → /aɪ dəʊn nəʊ/

4. Assimilation, səslərin bənzəşməsi

  • did you → /dɪdʒuː/, don't you → /dəʊntʃuː/
  • ten boys → /tem bɔɪz/

5. Zəif formalar (weak forms)

Köməkçi sözlər vurğusuz olanda /ə/ (schwa) səsi ilə deyilir:

SözGüclüZəif
to/tuː//tə/
can/kæn//kən/
was/wɒz//wəz/
and/ænd//ən/
of/ɒv//əv/

6. Danışıq formaları

going to → gonna, want to → wanna, got to → gotta, would have → would've /ˈwʊdəv/. Bunları anlamaq vacibdir, amma rəsmi yazıda işlətmək olmaz.

Azərbaycanlılar üçün məsləhət

Azərbaycan dilində hər heca təxminən bərabər deyilir, ona görə ingiliscə zəif formaları da güclü deyirik: I want TO GO TO THE shop. Vurğulu sözləri uzadın, köməkçi sözləri qısaldın.

Examples

  • Can you turn it off?

    Onu söndürə bilərsən?

    /kən juː tɜː.nɪ.tɒf/

  • I'm going to call her next week.

    Gələn həftə ona zəng edəcəyəm.

    going to → gonna; next week → /neks wiːk/

  • Did you see that?

    Onu gördün?

    did you → /dɪdʒə/

  • A cup of tea, please.

    Bir fincan çay, zəhmət olmasa.

    of → /ə/: /ə kʌpə tiː/

  • I should have told you.

    Sənə deməli idim.

    should have → /ˈʃʊdəv/

  • Where are you from?

    Haralısan?

    are → /ə/, linking r: /weər ə juː frəm/

  • I don't know what to do.

    Nə edəcəyimi bilmirəm.

    /aɪ dəʊn nəʊ wɒtə duː/

Common mistakes

  • Pronouncing every word separately with a pause: I – want – to – go.

Linking words: I wanna go / I want tə go.

Hər sözü ayrıca demək nitqi robot kimi edir və dinləyicini yorur.

  • Writing 'I'm gonna apply for the job' in a formal email.

I am going to apply for the job.

    gonna, wanna yalnız danışıq formasıdır.

  • Writing 'should of' because it sounds like that.

    should have (should've)

Zəif formada have /əv/ kimi səslənir, amma yazıda have yazılır.

  • Stressing small words: I CAN SPEAK english.

    I can SPEAK ENGlish. (can = /kən/)

Təsdiq cümləsində can zəif deyilir; güclü /kæn/ inkar (can't) ilə qarışdırıla bilər.
