Explanation
The two th sounds
- /θ/ (voiceless): air only, no voice, think, three, thank you, month, bath, birthday.
- /ð/ (voiced): the same position with voice, this, the, they, mother, with, together.
How to make them: put the tip of your tongue between your top and bottom teeth, then push air out. For /ð/, add voice, you can feel your throat vibrate.
Common mistakes are replacing th with /s/, /t/, /z/ or /d/: think → sink, three → tree, this → zis. This can change the meaning.
Small grammar words (the, this, they, there) usually have /ð/. Practise with minimal pairs: think/sink, thin/tin, three/tree, they/day, mouth/mouse.
