Explanation
Why it matters
A stressed syllable is longer, louder and clearer. Unstressed vowels often become /ə/ (schwa). Wrong stress can make a word hard to understand.
Basic rules
- Two-syllable nouns and adjectives: usually the first syllable, TAble, HAPpy.
- Two-syllable verbs: usually the second, beGIN, deCIDE.
- Noun/verb pairs: REcord (n) / reCORD (v), PREsent / preSENT.
- Before -tion, -sion, -ic, -ity: stress the syllable before the suffix, inforMAtion, ecoNOmic, uniVERsity.
- -ful, -ness, -ment do not change the stress.
Stress can move in word families: PHOtograph, phoTOgrapher, photoGRAphic.

İngilis dilində yanlış vurğu sözü tanınmaz edə bilər. Məsələn, hotel sözünü HOtel kimi desəniz, ingilisdilli adam onu çətin anlayar, düzgünü hoTEL -dir. Vurğulu heca daha uzun, uca və aydın tələffüz olunur, vurğusuz hecalar isə çox vaxt zəifləyir və /ə/ (schwa) səsinə çevrilir: banana → bəNAnə.

Azərbaycan dilində vurğu əksər sözlərdə son hecaya düşür: kiTAB , kitabLAR , kitablaRIM. Buna görə azərbaycanlılar ingilis sözlərini də sonda vurğulamağa meyllidirlər: compuTER, *waTER *, səhvdir. Düzgünü: comPUter, WAter. Həmçinin Azərbaycan dilində vurğusuz saitlər zəifləmir, ingilis dilində isə zəifləyir.
