Pronunciation: intonation and meaning

Tələffüz: intonasiya və məna

After this lesson you can

  • Can use rising, falling and fall-rise intonation to signal meaning, attitude and discourse structure.
  • Can place nuclear stress on the appropriate word to highlight new or contrastive information.
  • Can identify and produce subtle intonation patterns that distinguish statements, questions, and implied meanings.

Explanation

Intonation is the variation of pitch across an utterance. In English it carries grammatical and pragmatic meaning: the same words can express certainty, doubt, politeness, irony or contrast depending on the tone. The main patterns are falling (statements, commands, certainty), rising (yes/no questions, uncertainty, lists), fall-rise (reservation, implied 'but') and rise-fall (surprise, sarcasm). Nuclear stress falls on the most important word, usually the one carrying new or contrastive information. Moving it changes the focus: I bought a red car vs I bought a red car. Tone units are separated by pauses, and their boundaries can alter meaning. Practise by saying the same sentence with different tones and noticing the shift in attitude.

Adətən tamamlanmış fikir, əminlik, əmr və ya xəbər cümlələrində işlənir: She lives in London. (düz xəbər).
  • Qalxan ton (rising): son hecada səs qalxır. Ümumi suallarda, əmin olmadıqda və ya qarşıdan cavab gözlədikdə: Are you coming?; həmçinin siyahıda sonuncudan əvvəl: apples, pears, and oranges.
  • Qalxan-düşən (fall-rise): əvvəl qalxır, sonra enir. Çox vaxt "amma", "hər halda", "sən bilirsən" kimi alt mətn bildirir: I'd love to come... (amma gələ bilmərəm).
  • Düşən-qalxan (rise-fall): güclü təəssürat, heyranlıq və ya istehza: Well, that was clever!

Nüvə vurğusu (nuclear stress)

Cümlədə ən vacib söz üzərinə düşən güclü vurğu nüvə vurğusudur. O, adətən yeni məlumatı daşıyan sözün üzərinə düşür:

  • I bought a red car. (qara deyil, qırmızı)
  • I bought a red car. (oğurlamaq yox, almaq)
    • I bought a red car.* (başqası yox, mən)

Azərbaycan dilində də vurğu mənanı dəyişir, amma ingilis dilində bu, daha sistemli şəkildə tonla birləşir.

Ton qrupu (tone unit)

Nitq ton qruplarına bölünür; hər qrupda bir nüvə vurğusu olur. Duraqlamalar bu qrupları ayırır və mənanı dəyişə bilər:

  • He didn't go, because he was ill. (getmədi, çünki xəstə idi)
  • He didn't go because he was ill. (xəstə olduğu üçün getmədi deyil, başqa səbəbdən)

Praktik məsləhətlər

  • Eyni cümləni müxtəlif tonlarla deyərək mənanın necə dəyişdiyini müşahidə edin.
  • Sual verərkən son sözün üzərinə qalxan ton qoyun; təsdiq edərkən düşən ton.
  • Nitqinizdə qalxan-düşən tondan istifadə edərək "amma" mənasını verin.
  • Nüvə vurğusunu dəyişərək eyni cümlədə fərqli məlumatı önə çıxarın.

Examples

  • She passed the exam. (falling)

O, imtahandan keçdi. (düşən ton, əminlik)

    tamamlanmış xəbər

  • She passed the exam? (rising)

O, imtahandan keçdi? (qalxan ton, təəccüb və ya şübhə)

  • I'd love to come. (fall-rise)

Gəlməyi çox istərdim... (amma gələ bilmərəm)

  • You're a genius! (rise-fall)

    Sən dahisən! (istehza ilə)

  • I didn't say that. (stress on I)

Mən bunu demədim. (başqası deyib, mən yox)

  • I didn't say that. (stress on say)

Mən bunu demədim. (yazdım, amma demədim)

  • Would you like tea or coffee? (rising on tea, falling on coffee)

Çay yoxsa qəhvə istəyirsiniz? (seçim sualı)

Common mistakes

  • Using a rising tone on every yes/no question and also on statements, making them sound uncertain.

Use falling tone for statements and rising only for genuine questions or uncertainty.

Azərbaycan dilində sual intonasiyası çox vaxt qalxan olur, lakin ingilis dilində xəbər cümlələri düşən tonla deyilir. Hər cümləni qalxan tonla demək təəccüb və ya şübhə yaradır.

  • Placing nuclear stress on the first word regardless of information focus.

Place nuclear stress on the word that carries new or contrastive information.

Nüvə vurğusu məlumatın harada olduğunu göstərir. Səhv yerdə vurğu mənanı təhrif edir.

  • Ignoring tone unit boundaries and pausing in the middle of a phrase.

Pause at meaningful boundaries to separate tone units.

Duraqlama yerləri mənanı dəyişir. Səhv duraqlama cümləni anlaşılmaz edir.

  • Using a flat tone throughout, which sounds robotic or indifferent.

Vary pitch to convey engagement and attitude.

Düz ton emosiyasızlıq və ya laqeydlik kimi qəbul olunur. İntonasiya canlı olmalıdır.
