  • Can use a/an with singular countable nouns mentioned for the first time and for jobs.

Explanation

a / an

Use with a singular countable noun when it is new or not specific, and for jobs: I saw a dog. She is a doctor. Use an before a vowel sound: an apple, an hour, but a university.

the

Use for something already mentioned (The dog was big), unique things (the sun, the internet), things both people know (Close the door), superlatives (the best), and some place names (the Caspian Sea, the USA).

No article

  • General plurals and uncountables: Dogs are friendly. I like music.
  • Meals: have breakfast
  • Most countries and cities: Azerbaijan, Baku
  • Sports: play football
  • Phrases like go to school, go home, by bus

Azerbaijani has no articles, so check every singular countable noun: it usually needs a/an, the, or my/this.

a / an, "bir", qeyri-müəyyən

  • Tək, sayılan isimlə, ilk dəfə xatırlananda: I saw a dog in the street.
  • Peşə və vəzifə üçün: My mother is a doctor. (✗ My mother is doctor)
  • a samit səsdən, an sait səsdən əvvəl: a car, a university (/ju/ səsi), an apple, an hour (h oxunmur).

the, müəyyən

  • Artıq bəhs olunan şey: I saw a dog. The dog was very big.
  • Yeganə olan şeylər: the sun, the moon, the sky, the world, the internet
  • Həm danışanın, həm dinləyənin bildiyi şey: Close the door, please. (bu otağın qapısı)
  • Üstünlük dərəcəsi: the best, the tallest
  • Bəzi yer adları: çaylar, dənizlər, cəmdə olan ölkələr, the Caspian Sea, the Kura, the USA, the UK

Artiklsız (zero article)

  • Ümumi mənada cəm isimlər: Dogs are friendly. (ümumiyyətlə itlər)
  • Ümumi mənada sayılmayan isimlər: *I like **music *. Water is important.
  • Yemək adları: have breakfast/lunch/dinner
  • Ölkə və şəhər adlarının çoxu: Azerbaijan, Baku, Italy
  • Bəzi ifadələr: *go **to school **, go **to work **, go **home **, **by bus *, at night
