Explanation

Talking about jobs

Ask: What do you do? Answer: I'm a nurse. / I work as a nurse. Always use a/an before a job.

  • work as + job: work as a driver
  • work for + company: work for a bank
  • work in + field or place: work in sales, work in an office

Useful phrases: apply for a job, have a job interview, earn a salary, full-time / part-time, work overtime, a day off, be unemployed.

People: boss, manager, colleague, employee, employer.

job is countable (a job); work is usually uncountable (a lot of work). Say go to work, not go to the work. We earn money at work; we win money in a competition.
