Explanation
What is a complex noun phrase?
A complex noun phrase consists of a head noun with multiple modifiers, either before it (** premodifiers ) or after it ( postmodifiers**). This structure is common in academic and journalistic writing because it packs information densely.
Premodifiers
Adjectives, nouns, and adjective+noun combinations can precede the head noun. The usual order is: determiner + opinion + size + age + shape + colour + origin + material + purpose + noun. For example: a beautiful old Italian wooden dining table. At C2 level, you will often see more elaborate combinations like a well-known London-based financial consulting firm.
Postmodifiers
These include prepositional phrases (the man in the corner), relative clauses (the book that I bought), participle clauses (the people waiting outside), infinitive clauses (the chance to succeed), and appositive clauses (the fact that he lied). They provide additional information about the noun and often carry the main content of the sentence.
Appositive and complement clauses
Appositives rename or explain a noun: The proposal, a bold move by the board, was accepted. Complement clauses follow certain nouns: the belief that hard work pays off, the question whether to proceed. These structures add evaluative meaning.
Stylistic functions
Complex noun phrases can:
- create concision: The government's decision to raise taxes (short and precise).
- create emphasis: heavy modifiers placed at the beginning attract attention.
- add formality: expressions like the aforementioned document are used in legal and academic texts.
Comparison with Azerbaijani
In Azerbaijani, modifiers usually come before the noun and are linked by the genitive case: Universitetin yeni elmi şurasının qərarı. In English, modifiers can come both before and after, and the order is more rigid. For example, the university's decision to establish a new research council has an infinitive clause after the noun.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up modifier order: a wooden beautiful table instead of a beautiful wooden table.
- Omitting articles: complex noun phrase instead of a complex noun phrase.
- Misplacing stress and punctuation in long noun combinations.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Mürəkkəb isim ifadəsi nədir?
Mürəkkəb isim ifadəsi (complex noun phrase) bir ismin ətrafında toplanan çoxsaylı təyinedicilərdən (modifier) ibarətdir. Bu təyinedicilər isimdən əvvəl (premodification) və ya sonra (postmodification) gələ bilər. Belə ifadələr yazılı nitqdə, xüsusilə akademik və jurnalist üslubunda informasiyanı sıxlaşdırmağa imkan verir.
İsimdən əvvəl gələn təyinedicilər (premodifiers)
İngilis dilində sifət, isim, sifət+isim birləşmələri isimdən əvvəl gələ bilər. Sıra adətən belədir: determiner + opinion + size + age + shape + colour + origin + material + purpose + noun. Məsələn: a beautiful old Italian wooden dining table. Lakin C2 səviyyəsində daha mürəkkəb birləşmələr, məsələn a well-known London-based financial consulting firm kimi ifadələr tez-tez rast gəlinir.
İsimdən sonra gələn təyinedicilər (postmodifiers)
Bunlara prepositional phrases (the man in the corner), relative clauses (the book that I bought), participle clauses (the people waiting outside), infinitive clauses (the chance to succeed) və appositive clauses (the fact that he lied) daxildir. Bu quruluşlar isim haqqında əlavə məlumat verir və çox vaxt cümlənin əsas məzmununu daşıyır.
Appozitiv və tamamlıq budaq cümlələri
Appositive quruluşlar ismi yenidən adlandırır və ya izah edir: The proposal, a bold move by the board, was accepted. Complement clauses isə müəyyən isimlərdən sonra gəlir: the belief that hard work pays off, the question whether to proceed. Bu cür quruluşlar nitqə qiymətverici çalar qatır.
Üslubi funksiyalar
Mürəkkəb isim ifadələri:
- yığcamlıq yaradır: The government's decision to raise taxes (qısa və dəqiq).
- vurğu yaradır: ifadənin əvvəlinə keçirilən ağır təyinedicilər diqqəti cəlb edir.
- rəsmiyyət qatır: the aforementioned document kimi ifadələr hüquqi və akademik mətnlərdə işlənir.
Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə
Azərbaycan dilində təyinedicilər əsasən isimdən əvvəl gəlir və tamlıq halı ilə bağlanır: Universitetin yeni elmi şurasının qərarı. İngilis dilində isə təyinedicilər həm əvvəl, həm sonra gələ bilər və sıra daha sərtdir. Məsələn, the university's decision to establish a new research council ifadəsində to establish infinitive budaq cümləsi isimdən sonra gəlir.
Tipik səhvlər
- Təyinedicilərin sırasını qarışdırmaq: a wooden beautiful table əvəzinə a beautiful wooden table.
- Artiklin buraxılması: complex noun phrase əvəzinə a complex noun phrase.
- Çoxsaylı isim birləşmələrində vurğu və durğu işarələrinin səhv qoyulması.
