Fine shades of modality
Modal mənaların incə çalarları
After this lesson you can
- Can distinguish epistemic (probability) and deontic (obligation/permission) uses of modal verbs and choose the form that matches the intended strength.
- Can use past modals (must have, might have, needn't have, could have) to express nuanced judgements about past events.
- Can soften or strengthen statements appropriately in academic and professional contexts using hedges, boosters and modal idioms.
Explanation
Two kinds of modality
- Epistemic modality shows how certain the speaker is: She must be at home (strong probability), She might be at home (weak possibility).
- Deontic modality shows obligation, permission or prohibition: You must wear a helmet, You may leave now.
Probability scale
must (almost certain) > should (probable) > may / might / could (possible) > can't / couldn't (impossible).
Past modals
- must have + past participle: strong deduction about the past. They must have missed the train.
- might have / could have + past participle: uncertain past possibility. She might have forgotten.
- needn't have + past participle: you did it but it was unnecessary. You needn't have cooked.
- didn't need to + verb: it was unnecessary, so you probably didn't do it. I didn't need to pay.
- should have + past participle: regret or criticism. You should have told me.
Hedging and boosting
In academic and professional English, soften claims with **may **, **might **, **appear to **, **seem to **, **It is possible that **. Strengthen with **clearly **, **undoubtedly **, cannot.
Watch out
Mustn't = prohibition; can't = impossibility. May is formal permission; can is informal. Could can mean past ability or present possibility.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Modal məna növləri
İngilis dilində modal feillər iki əsas qrupa bölünür:
- Epistemik (ehtimal): danışanın hadisənin doğruluğuna dair qiyməti. She must be at home. (qəti ehtimal), She might be at home. (zəif ehtimal).
- Deontik (öhdəlik/icazə): yükümlülük, icazə, qadağa. You must wear a helmet. (öhdəlik), You may leave now. (icazə).
Azərbaycan dilində bu fərq çox vaxt kontekstdən aydın olur, ingilis dilində isə modal feilin özü çaları daşıyır.
Ehtimal şkalası
| Güc | Modal | Nümunə |
|---|---|---|
| ~100% | must | He must be tired. |
| ~80% | should | She should be there by now. |
| ~50% | may / might / could | It might rain later. |
| ~20% | can't / couldn't | That can't be true. |
Keçmişə dair modal + have
- must have + V3: güclü ehtimal. They must have missed the train.
- might have / could have + V3: mümkün, amma qeyri-müəyyən. She might have forgotten.
- needn't have + V3: lazım deyildi, amma edildi. You needn't have cooked; we had already eaten.
- didn't need to + V: lazım deyildi və edilmədi (ümumi mənada). I didn't need to pay.
- should have + V3: edilməli idi, amma edilmədi (təəssüf). You should have told me.
Yumşaltma (hedging) və gücləndirmə
Akademik və peşəkar ünsiyyətdə fikri yumşaltmaq üçün:
- may / might / could + feil: This may suggest...
- It is possible that..., There is a tendency for...
- **appear to **, seem to: The results appear to confirm... Gücləndirmək üçün: **clearly **, **undoubtedly **, must (epistemik), cannot.
Diqqət ediləcək incəliklər
- must inkarı mustn't (qadağa) və ya can't (ehtimal) ilə verilir: You mustn't smoke (qadağa), He can't be serious (ehtimal).
- may rəsmi icazə, can danışıq dilində icazə: May I ask a question? (rəsmi), Can I ask? (qeyri-rəsmi).
- could keçmiş qabiliyyət və ya indiki ehtimal: She could swim at five (qabiliyyət), It could be true (ehtimal).
- will və would ehtimalda: That will be John at the door (qəti ehtimal), That would be nice (arzu).
Tipik səhvlər
Azərbaycan dilində "lazımdır" həm öhdəlik, həm də ehtimal bildirir; ingilis dilində isə must (öhdəlik) və must be (ehtimal) fərqləndirilməlidir. Həmçinin needn't have ilə didn't need to qarışdırılır: birincisi artıq edilmiş hərəkətə aiddir, ikincisi isə ümumiyyətlə ehtiyac olmadığını bildirir.
Examples
She must have left her umbrella at the office.
O, yəqin ki, çətirini ofisdə qoyub.
keçmişə dair güclü ehtimal
You needn't have bought so much food; we already had plenty.
Bu qədər yemək almağa ehtiyac yox idi; artıq kifayət qədər var idi.
hərəkət edildi, amma lazımsız idi
The findings may indicate a broader trend.
Nəticələr daha geniş bir tendensiyanı göstərə bilər.
akademik yumşaltma
You mustn't use your phone during the exam.
İmtahan zamanı telefondan istifadə etməməlisən.
qadağa
That can't be the right answer; let me check again.
Bu düzgün cavab ola bilməz; bir daha yoxlayım.
qeyri-mümkünlük
May I interrupt for a moment?
Bir anlıq sözünüzü kəsə bilərəm?
rəsmi icazə
He should have apologised, but he didn't.
O, üzr istəməli idi, amma etmədi.
təəssüf

Modal feildən sonra **to** işlədilmir: must + bare infinitive.

She can't have finished already; it's too early.
Bu cümlə düzgündür, amma çox vaxt şagirdlər **can't have** yerinə **mustn't have** işlədirlər. Ehtimal üçün **can't have** lazımdır.
I didn't need to cook, so I cooked anyway.
I needn't have cooked, so I cooked anyway.
Hərəkət edilibsə, **needn't have + V3** işlədilir; **didn't need to** ümumiyyətlə hərəkətin edilmədiyini bildirir.
It might rains tomorrow.
It might rain tomorrow.
Modal feildən sonra feil -s qəbul etmir: might + bare infinitive.
