Reporting verbs and stance

Nəql feilləri və münasibət bildirmə

After this lesson you can

  • Can select reporting verbs that convey precise evaluative stance (e.g., claim, concede, insinuate, acknowledge).
  • Can use syntactic patterns (verb + that-clause, verb + object + infinitive, verb + -ing) accurately with advanced reporting verbs.
  • Can integrate stance adverbs and adjectives to fine-tune the speaker's attitude in reported speech.

Explanation

Reporting verbs and stance

Reporting verbs do more than transmit information; they encode the speaker's attitude, certainty, or criticism. He said is neutral, but He claimed suggests doubt, He conceded implies reluctance, and He insinuated carries a negative slant.

Syntactic patterns

Advanced reporting verbs follow specific patterns:

  • verb + that-clause: She acknowledged that the data were incomplete.
  • verb + object + infinitive: They urged the committee to reconsider.
  • verb + -ing: He denied leaking the report.
  • verb + object + preposition + -ing: She accused him of exaggerating.

Some verbs are restricted: insist on doing, refuse to do, suggest doing or suggest that someone do.

Stance adverbs and adjectives

Stance adverbs sharpen the attitude: frankly admitted, flatly denied, tentatively suggested. Adjectives also contribute: a scathing attack, a cautious welcome.

Comparison with Azerbaijani

Azerbaijani often conveys stance through the verb itself (iddia etdi, etiraf etdi) or additional adverbs (kəskin şəkildə tənqid etdi). English requires careful selection of both verb and adverb. At C2, the goal is pragmatic precision: She hinted that... differs significantly from She stated that....

Nəql feilləri və münasibət

İngilis dilində reporting verbs (nəql feilləri) sadəcə məlumat ötürmür; onlar danışanın mövqeyini, şübhəsini, təsdiqini və ya tənqidini əks etdirir. Məsələn, He said that... neytraldır, amma He claimed that... ehtiyatlılıq, He conceded that... güzəşt, He insinuated that... isə mənfi işarə verir.

Sintaktik quruluşlar

Nəql feilləri müxtəlif quruluşlarla işlənir:

  • verb + that-clause: She acknowledged that the data were incomplete.
  • verb + object + infinitive: They urged the committee to reconsider.
  • verb + -ing: He denied leaking the report.
  • verb + object + preposition + -ing: She accused him of exaggerating.

Bəzi feillər yalnız bir quruluşu qəbul edir: insist on doing, refuse to do, suggest doing (və ya suggest that someone do).

Münasibət zərfləri və sifətlər

Nəql feilinin yanında stance adverbs (münasibət zərfləri) işlədərək mənanı dəqiqləşdirmək olar: frankly admitted, flatly denied, tentatively suggested, strongly condemned. Sifətlər də rol oynayır: a scathing attack, a cautious welcome.

Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə

Azərbaycan dilində münasibət çox vaxt feilin özü ilə (iddia etdi, etiraf etdi, ima etdi) və ya əlavə sözlərlə (kəskin şəkildə tənqid etdi) verilir. İngilis dilində isə həm feil, həm də zərf seçimi vacibdir. Məsələn, He said neytraldır, He alleged isə hüquqi və ya şübhəli kontekst yaradır.

Üslub və dəqiqlik

C2 səviyyəsində məqsəd sadəcə qrammatik cəhətdən düzgün cümlə qurmaq deyil, həm də pragmatik dəqiqlik əldə etməkdir. She hinted that... ilə She stated that... arasındakı fərq böyükdür: birincisi dolayı işarə, ikincisi açıq bəyanatdır. Rəsmi yazıda contend, maintain, assert kimi feillər tez-tez rast gəlinir və onların hər biri fərqli inam dərəcəsi bildirir.
