Vocabulary: idiomatic precision

İdiomatik dəqiqlik: ifadələrin dəqiq seçimi

After this lesson you can

  • Can choose between near-synonymous idioms to match register, tone and pragmatic intent.
  • Can use idioms with precise collocational and grammatical constraints (e.g. verb patterns, fixed prepositions).
  • Can recognise and correct subtle errors of idiom use in formal and informal contexts.

Explanation

What is idiomatic precision?

At C2 level, knowing an idiom is not enough. You must use it with the right **register **, tone and grammatical pattern.

Register and tone

Near-synonymous idioms can differ in formality:

  • be in two minds (neutral): I'm in two minds about accepting the offer.
  • sit on the fence (more critical, conversational): He's been sitting on the fence for months. In a formal letter, remain undecided may be safer than sit on the fence.

Grammatical constraints

Many idioms require fixed patterns:

  • take something for granted: She took his support for granted.
  • have a soft spot for: I have a soft spot for old cinemas. (not on)
  • be on the verge of doing: The company is on the verge of collapsing. (not to collapse)

Subtle differences

  • a blessing in disguise: something that seems bad but turns out well. Losing that job was a blessing in disguise.
  • a silver lining: the positive aspect of a difficult situation. The silver lining is that we now have more time.

Checklist for precision

  1. Check the register (formal, neutral, colloquial).
  2. Check the grammatical pattern (verb + object, adjective + preposition).
  3. Check the context (who is speaking, when).
  4. Avoid overusing idioms: too many in one text sounds artificial.

İdiomatik dəqiqlik nədir?

İdiomlar söz birləşmələridir ki, mənaları tərkib hissələrindən çıxarıla bilməz. Lakin C2 səviyyəsində əsas məsələ sadəcə idiom bilmək deyil, onu düzgün kontekstdə, düzgün qrammatik quruluşla və düzgün tonda işlətməkdir.

Üslub və ton

Eyni mənanı verən iki idiom fərqli registrlərdə işlənə bilər:

  • to be in two minds (neytral): I'm in two minds about accepting the offer.
  • to sit on the fence (daha tənqidi, danışıq): He's been sitting on the fence for months. Rəsmi məktubda sit on the fence yersiz ola bilər; əvəzinə remain undecided işlətmək daha uyğundur.

Qrammatik məhdudiyyətlər

Bir çox idiom müəyyən quruluş tələb edir:

  • take something for granted (obyekt tələb edir): She took his support for granted. (Yox: She took for granted his support – bu sıra daha az təbii olsa da, bəzən uzun obyektlə işlənir, amma qısa obyektlə səhvdir.)
  • have a soft spot for somebody/something: I have a soft spot for old cinemas. (Yox: have a soft spot on)
  • be on the verge of doing something: The company is on the verge of collapsing. (Yox: on the verge to collapse)

Yaxın mənalı ifadələr arasında fərq

  • a blessing in disguise (əvvəlcə pis görünən, sonra yaxşı olan): Losing that job was a blessing in disguise.
  • a silver lining (çətin vəziyyətdə müsbət cəhət): The silver lining is that we now have more time. Birinci ifadə hadisənin özünü, ikincisi isə vəziyyətin müsbət tərəfini vurğulayır.

Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə

Azərbaycan dilində də idiomlar var: daş atıb qolunu gizlətmək, ağzı qulağına çatmaq. Lakin onları söz-söz tərcümə etmək olmaz. Məsələn, ağzı qulağına çatmaq ingilis dilində be over the moon və ya be grinning from ear to ear kimi verilir, amma kontekstdən asılı olaraq be thrilled daha neytral və rəsmi olar.

Dəqiqlik üçün yoxlama siyahısı

  1. İdiomun registrini yoxla (rəsmi, neytral, danışıq, arxaik).
  2. Qrammatik quruluşu yoxla (feil + obyekt, sifət + preposition).
  3. Kontekstə uyğunluğunu yoxla (kimə deyilir, nə vaxt).
  4. Həddindən artıq idiom işlətməkdən çəkin: hər cümlədə idiom olması nitqi süni göstərir.

Examples

  • I'm in two minds about whether to accept the offer.

    Təklifi qəbul edib-etməmək barədə qərarsızam.

    neytral ton

  • The committee has been sitting on the fence for too long.

    Komitə çoxdan bəri qərarsız qalır.

    tənqidi ton

  • She took her colleagues' help for granted.

    O, həmkarlarının köməyini təbii qarşılayırdı.

    take something for granted

  • He has a soft spot for jazz from the 1950s.

Onun 1950-ci illərin caz musiqisinə xüsusi meyli var.

    have a soft spot for

  • Losing that contract was a blessing in disguise; it forced us to rethink our strategy.

Həmin müqaviləni itirmək əslində yaxşı oldu; bu, bizi strategiyamızı yenidən düşünməyə məcbur etdi.

    blessing in disguise

Yaxşı tərəfi odur ki, indi tədqiqat üçün daha çox vaxtımız var.

    silver lining

  • The company is on the verge of collapsing.

    Şirkət dağılmaq üzrədir.

on the verge of + -ing

Common mistakes

  • I have a soft spot on old films.

I have a soft spot for old films.

Düzgün preposition **for**-dur: have a soft spot **for** somebody/something.

  • The firm is on the verge to collapse.

The firm is on the verge of collapsing.

**on the verge of** + -ing forması işlənir, nəinki to + infinitiv.

  • He took for granted her support.

He took her support for granted.

Obyekt **take** ilə **for granted** arasında gəlir: take something for granted.

  • Losing the job was a silver lining in disguise.

Losing the job was a blessing in disguise.

İki idiom qarışdırılmamalıdır: **a blessing in disguise** hadisənin özünə, **a silver lining** isə vəziyyətin müsbət tərəfinə aiddir.
