Vocabulary: figurative language
Məcazi dil: obrazlı ifadələr
After this lesson you can
- Can identify and interpret metaphors, similes, and personification in written and spoken texts.
- Can use figurative language appropriately to create emphasis, humour, or persuasion without causing confusion.
- Can distinguish between dead, conventional, and creative metaphors and choose the right level of freshness for a given register.
Explanation
What is figurative language?
Figurative language uses words in a non-literal way to create vivid images, convey complex ideas concisely, or produce emotional impact. It includes:
- Metaphor: The city is a jungle.
- Simile: Her voice was like velvet.
- Personification: The wind whispered through the trees.
- Metonymy: The Crown decided to act.
- Hyperbole: I've told you a million times.
Degrees of freshness
- Dead metaphors have lost their imagery: the leg of the table.
- Conventional metaphors are common but still felt: a sea of faces.
- Creative metaphors are new and striking: Her silence was a locked room.
Register
Formal academic or legal texts prefer restrained, conventional imagery. Journalism and literature welcome creative metaphors. In speech, hyperbole often creates humour.
Common pitfalls
- Mixed metaphors: We need to steer the ship out of the fire.
- Overuse: too many metaphors tire the reader.
- Obscurity: the image must be immediately clear.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Məcazi dil nədir?
Figurative language sözləri hərfi mənasından fərqli, obrazlı mənada işlədir. Məqsəd oxucuda və ya dinləyicidə güclü təəssürat yaratmaq, mürəkkəb fikri yığcam çatdırmaq və ya emosional təsir göstərməkdır. Azərbaycan dilində də belə ifadələr çoxdur: ürəyi daş kimi, gözü dönmək, dağ kimi dayanmaq.
Əsas növlər
- Metaphor (metafora): bir şeyi başqa şey kimi təqdim edir, like/as işlənmir. The city is a jungle. Şəhər cəngəllikdir.
- Simile (bənzətmə): like və ya as ilə müqayisə. Her voice was like velvet. Səsi məxmər kimi idi.
- Personification (şəxsləşdirmə): cansız əşyaya insan xüsusiyyəti verilir. The wind whispered through the trees. Külək ağaclar arasında pıçıldayırdı.
- Metonymy (metonimiya): əlaqəli anlayışla əvəzləmə. The Crown decided to act. Tac (kral ailəsi) hərəkət etməyə qərar verdi.
- Hyperbole (hiperbola): qəsdən şişirtmə. I've told you a million times. Sənə milyon dəfə demişəm.
Təzəlik dərəcəsi
- Dead metaphors (ölü metaforalar): artıq obrazlılığını itirmiş, adi söz kimi qəbul edilir: the leg of the table, a head of state.
- Conventional metaphors (ənənəvi): tez-tez işlənir, lakin hələ də obrazlıdır: a sea of faces, a flood of complaints.
- Creative metaphors (yaradıcı): yeni və gözlənilməz: Her silence was a locked room. Onun sükutu bağlı bir otaq idi.
Üslub və uyğunluq
Rəsmi mətnlərdə (akademik, hüquqi) çox parlaq metaforalar yersiz görünə bilər; əvəzinə ölçülü, ənənəvi obrazlar seçilir. Publisistikada və bədii ədəbiyyatda isə yaradıcı metaforalar alqışlanır. Danışıqda hiperbola tez-tez yumor yaradır.
Azərbaycan dilindən fərqlər
Azərbaycan dilindəki bəzi obrazlı ifadələr ingilis dilinə hərfi tərcümə olunmur: başıma dərd oldu → it became a headache for me (hərfi: it became a pain to my head deyilmir). Buna görə də ifadələri bütöv öyrənmək lazımdır.
Tipik səhvlər
- Qarışıq metafora (mixed metaphor): We need to steer the ship out of the fire. Gəmi və od bir-birinə uyğun deyil.
- Həddindən artıq bəzək: hər cümlədə metafora oxucunu yorur.
- Mənası aydın olmayan obraz: oxucu nəyi nəzərdə tutduğunuzu başa düşməlidir.
Examples
The news hit her like a physical blow.
Xəbər onu bədənə dəymiş zərbə kimi sarsıtdı.
simile (like)
Time is a thief that steals our best moments.
Zaman ən yaxşı anlarımızı oğurlayan oğrudur.
metaphor
The old house groaned under the weight of the snow.
Köhnə ev qarın ağırlığı altında inləyirdi.
personification
The pen is mightier than the sword.
Qələm qılıncdan güclüdür.
metonymy: pen = writing, sword = force
I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.
O qədər acam ki, at yeyə bilərəm.
hyperbole
Her smile was a ray of sunshine in the gloomy room.
Onun təbəssümü qaranlıq otaqda bir günəş şüası idi.
creative metaphor
The company is drowning in paperwork.
Şirkət sənədlər içində boğulur.
conventional metaphor
Common mistakes
The wind was like whispering secrets.
The wind whispered secrets.
Şəxsləşdirmədə 'like' işlədilmir; cansız əşyaya birbaşa insan xüsusiyyəti verilir.
We need to steer the ship out of the fire.
We need to steer the ship out of the storm.
Qarışıq metafora (gəmi və od) mənasız görünür. Obrazlar bir-birinə uyğun olmalıdır.
He is a snake in the grass, but he is very kind.
He is a snake in the grass, so be careful.
'Snake in the grass' mənfi məna daşıyır; cümlədə ziddiyyət yaranmamalıdır.
My head is a computer that needs to sleep.
My mind is a computer that needs to rest.
Metafora məntiqli olmalıdır: kompüter 'rest' edə bilər, 'sleep' etmir.
