Vocabulary: connotation and nuance
Lüğət: konnotasiya və incə məna fərqləri
After this lesson you can
- Can distinguish between words with similar denotations but different connotations (positive, negative, neutral).
- Can choose words that match the register and tone of a text (formal, informal, literary).
- Can explain the nuance between near-synonyms and use them appropriately in context.
Explanation
Denotation vs connotation
Denotation is the literal meaning of a word. Connotation is the emotional or cultural association it carries. For example, cheap and affordable both mean 'not expensive', but cheap often suggests low quality, while affordable is neutral or positive.
Examples
- slim (positive) / thin (neutral) / skinny (negative)
- determined (positive) / stubborn (negative)
- childlike (positive) / childish (negative)
Register
Choose words that fit the situation. Formal: The committee requires further information. Neutral: The committee needs more information. Informal: The committee wants more info.
How to learn
When you learn a new word, note its synonyms and whether they are positive, negative or neutral. Pay attention to the contexts in which they appear.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Denotasiya və konnotasiya
Denotasiya sözün lüğəvi, əsas mənasıdır. Konnotasiya isə həmin sözün yaratdığı əlavə emosional və ya mədəni assosiasiyadır. Məsələn, cheap və affordable hər ikisi 'az pul tələb edən' deməkdir, lakin cheap çox vaxt mənfi (keyfiyyətsiz) çalar verir, affordable isə neytral və ya müsbətdir.
Nümunələr
- slim (müsbət: cəlbedici arıq) / thin (neytral) / skinny (mənfi: həddindən artıq arıq)
- determined (müsbət: qətiyyətli) / stubborn (mənfi: inadkar)
- inexpensive (neytral) / cheap (mənfi) / budget-friendly (müsbət)
- childlike (müsbət: uşaq kimi təmiz) / childish (mənfi: uşaq kimi davranan)
Üslub (register)
Eyni fikri müxtəlif üslublarda ifadə etmək olar:
- Formal: The committee requires further information.
- Neytral: The committee needs more information.
- İnformal: The committee wants more info.
Söz seçimi mətnin tonunu müəyyən edir. Rəsmi məktubda kids əvəzinə **children **, get əvəzinə obtain və ya receive işlətmək daha məqsədəuyğundur.
Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə
Azərbaycan dilində də konnotasiya var: arıq neytraldır, cılız isə mənfidir. İngilis dilində bu fərq daha geniş yayılıb və söz seçimi mətnin üslubunu və müəllifin mövqeyini əks etdirir.
Necə öyrənməli
Yeni söz öyrənərkən onunla eyni mənalı digər sözləri də qeyd edin və hansı çalar daşıdığını müəyyənləşdirin. Lüğətdə synonyms bölməsinə baxın və nümunə cümlələrdə işlədilməsinə diqqət yetirin.

Yeni smartfon münasib qiymətədir, ona görə çox adam ala bilər.
