Explanation

What are advanced phrasal verbs?

Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb and an adverb or preposition, often with an idiomatic meaning. At C1 level, you need to know which ones are separable, which are inseparable, and how formal or informal they are.

Key points

  • Separable: turn the TV off / turn off the TV, but with pronouns: turn it off.
  • Inseparable: look after the children / look after them (not look them after).
  • Three-part: put up with, get out of, look forward to + -ing.
  • Register: many phrasal verbs are informal. In formal writing, use single verbs: postpone instead of put off, discover instead of find out.
  • Collocation: learn the whole phrase, e.g. put up with noise, come across a photo.

  • I look forward to hear from you. → to hearing
  • She put up the meeting. → put off the meeting
  • I can't put up this noise. → put up with this noise

Frazal feil nədir?

Frazal feil feil + zərf və ya feil + sözönü birləşməsidir və mənası çox vaxt hissələrin mənasından fərqlənir. Məsələn, give up (imtina etmək), put off (təxirə salmaq), come across (təsadüfən rastlaşmaq).

Növləri

  1. Ayrıla bilən (separable): obyekt əvəzlikdirsə, hissələr ayrılır: turn the TV off və ya turn off the TV, amma turn it off (yalnız belə).
  2. Ayrıla bilməyən (inseparable): hissələr ayrılmır: look after the children, look after them (look them after yox).
  3. Üç hissəli: put up with (dözmək), get out of (yayınmaq), look forward to (səbirsizliklə gözləmək).

  • go up → increase
