Vocabulary: common idioms
Lüğət: geniş yayılmış idiomlar
After this lesson you can
- Can understand and use a range of common English idioms accurately in context.
- Can distinguish between idioms that are appropriate in informal conversation and those acceptable in neutral or semi-formal writing.
- Can paraphrase idiomatic expressions and explain their meaning to others.
Explanation
What is an idiom?
An idiom is a fixed expression whose meaning is not obvious from the individual words. For example, break the ice means to start a conversation in a social situation, not to break frozen water.
Why learn them?
At C1, idioms make your English sound natural and fluent. But you must use them appropriately: some are informal, others are neutral.
Register
- Informal: hit the nail on the head, be over the moon, cost an arm and a leg.
- Neutral / semi-formal: a double-edged sword, the tip of the iceberg, in the long run.
- Formal writing: use idioms sparingly; a neutral paraphrase is often better.
Common mistakes
- Changing the words: break the ice, not break ice.
- Translating literally: cost an arm and a leg means "be very expensive".
- Using informal idioms in formal contexts.
Learning tip
Learn each idiom in a full sentence and link it to a real situation. Note a synonym: over the moon = delighted.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
İdiom nədir?
İdiom – tərkibindəki sözlərin ayrı-ayrı mənasından çıxmayan, sabit məna daşıyan ifadədir. Məsələn, break the ice sözün düz mənası "buzu sındırmaq" deyil, "söhbətə başlamaq, ab-havanı yumşaltmaq" deməkdir. Azərbaycan dilində də belə ifadələr var: ürəyi dağa dönmək, başı lovğalamaq. Onları söz-söz tərcümə etmək olmaz.
Nə üçün vacibdir?
İdiomlar C1 səviyyəsində danışıq və yazıda nitqi təbii və canlı edir. Lakin onları yerində işlətmək lazımdır: hər idiom hər üsluba uyğun deyil.
Üslub (register)
- Danışıq üçün: hit the nail on the head, be over the moon, cost an arm and a leg, let the cat out of the bag.
- Neytral / yazı üçün: a double-edged sword, the tip of the iceberg, in the long run, a blessing in disguise.
- Rəsmi yazıda: idiomlardan ehtiyatla istifadə edin; çox vaxt onları neytral ifadə ilə əvəz etmək daha yaxşıdır.
Məna və kontekst
İdiomun mənasını kontekstdən tapmaq vacibdir. Məsələn:
- The new policy is a double-edged sword: it helps some families but hurts others. – Burada idiom "həm fayda, həm zərər gətirən" deməkdir.
- I was over the moon when I heard the news. – "Çox sevindim".
Tipik səhvlər
- Söz düzümünü dəyişmək: break the ice deyil, break ice və ya break an ice yazmaq səhvdir. İdiomlar sabitdir.
- Söz-söz tərcümə: It costs an arm and a leg ifadəsini "bir qol və bir ayaq bahadır" kimi başa düşmək olmaz; mənası "çox bahadır".
- Yanlış üslub: rəsmi hesabatda over the moon kimi danışıq ifadəsi yersizdir; extremely pleased daha uyğundur.
Yadda saxlama üsulu
İdiomu cümlə içində, real vəziyyətlə əlaqələndirərək öyrənin. Hər idiom üçün bir qısa hekayə və ya assosiasiya yaradın. Həmçinin sinonimini bilin: over the moon = delighted, hit the nail on the head = identify exactly.
