Academic English: building an argument

Akademik ingilis dili: arqument qurmaq

After this lesson you can

  • Can structure a clear argument in an academic essay with a thesis, reasons, evidence and counter-argument.
  • Can use hedging and boosting language appropriately to present claims with the right strength.
  • Can write coherent paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details and concluding links.

Explanation

What is an argument?

In academic writing, an argument is not just an opinion. It is a claim supported by reasons and evidence. A strong argument has a clear structure.

Structure of an argumentative essay

  1. Introduction – presents the topic and a thesis statement.
  2. Body paragraphs – each one develops one idea. Start with a **topic sentence **, then give **evidence **, analysis and a link.
  3. Counter-argument – present the opposing view and respond to it.
  4. Conclusion – restates the thesis without adding new ideas.

Hedging and boosting

Academic language is often cautious. Use hedging to soften claims: may, might, could, tend to, suggest, to some extent, it could be argued that. Use boosting only when evidence is strong: clearly shows, widely accepted, undoubtedly.

Linking words

  • Cause: because of, due to
  • Result: therefore, consequently
  • Addition: furthermore, moreover
  • Contrast: however, nevertheless
  • Example: for instance
  • Summary: in conclusion

Common mistakes

Missing thesis, claims without evidence, overgeneralisation, and ignoring the counter-argument.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Arqument nədir?

Akademik yazıda arqument sadəcə fikir demək deyil. O, əsaslandırılmış iddiadır: müəllif bir mövqe irəli sürür, onu səbəblər və dəlillərlə müdafiə edir, qarşı tərəfin fikirlərini nəzərə alır və nəticə çıxarır. Yaxşı arqument oxucunu inandırmağa yönəlir, amma emosional deyil, məntiqlidir.

Esse strukturunun əsas hissələri

  1. Introduction (giriş) – mövzunu təqdim edir və thesis statement (əsas tezis) verir. Tezis bir cümlədə yazılır və esse boyu müdafiə olunur.
  2. Body paragraphs (əsas paraqraflar) – hər paraqraf bir fikri inkişaf etdirir. Paraqraf topic sentence ilə başlayır, sonra evidence (dəlil), analysis (təhlil) və link (keçid) gəlir.
  3. Counter-argument (əks arqument) – qarşı tərəfin ən güclü fikri verilir və təkzib olunur. Bu, yazıya obyektivlik qatır.
  4. Conclusion (nəticə) – tezisi yekunlaşdırır, yeni fikir əlavə etmir.

İddianın gücü: hedging və boosting

Akademik dil ehtiyatlı olmağı tələb edir. Hamı tərəfindən qəbul edilməyən fikirləri hedging ilə yumşaldırıq:

  • This may be due to... (Bu, ... ilə bağlı ola bilər)
  • The results suggest that... (Nəticələr göstərir ki...)
  • It could be argued that... (Bunu iddia etmək olar ki...)
  • To some extent, this is true. (Müəyyən dərəcədə doğrudur.)

Əksinə, güclü dəlilə əsaslanan fikirləri boosting ilə vurğulayırıq:

  • The evidence clearly shows that...
  • It is widely accepted that...
  • This undoubtedly plays a key role.

Azərbaycan dilində də belə fərq var: "ola bilər" ilə "şübhəsiz ki" arasındakı fərq kimi. Akademik yazıda həddindən artıq qətiyyət (This proves that...) ehtiyatla işlədilməlidir.

Keçid ifadələri

Arqumentin hissələrini bağlamaq üçün:

  • Səbəb: because of, due to, owing to
  • Nəticə: therefore, consequently, as a result
  • Əlavə: furthermore, moreover, in addition
  • Ziddiyyət: however, nevertheless, whereas
  • Nümunə: for instance, to illustrate
  • Xülasə: in conclusion, to sum up

Paraqraf nümunəsi

Topic sentence: Remote work can increase productivity for certain jobs. Evidence: A recent survey found that employees in IT roles reported fewer interruptions at home. Analysis: This suggests that the nature of the task matters more than the location. Link: However, this advantage may not apply to collaborative roles.

Bu dörd addım (point, evidence, analysis, link) akademik paraqrafın onurğa sütunudur.

Tipik səhvlər

  • Tezisin olmaması: esse mövzu ətrafında fırlanır, amma konkret mövqe bildirmir.
  • Dəlilsiz iddia: Social media is harmful. – kimə, nəyə görə? Dəlil lazımdır.
  • Həddindən artıq qətiyyət: This proves that all students cheat. – may, tend to, in many cases kimi yumşaldıcılar lazımdır.
  • Əks arqumentin buraxılması: bir tərəfli yazı inandırıcılığı azaldır.

Examples

  • The evidence suggests that remote work may improve productivity in certain sectors.

Dəlillər göstərir ki, uzaqdan işləmə müəyyən sektorlarda məhsuldarlığı artıra bilər.

    hedging: suggests, may

  • It is widely accepted that regular exercise contributes to better mental health.

Müntəzəm idmanın psixi sağlamlığa müsbət təsir etdiyi hamı tərəfindən qəbul edilir.

    boosting: widely accepted

  • While some argue that online learning lacks interaction, others point to its flexibility.

Bəziləri onlayn təhsildə qarşılıqlı əlaqənin olmadığını iddia etsə də, digərləri onun çevikliyini qeyd edir.

    counter-argument

  • Consequently, the policy had a significant impact on rural communities.

Nəticə olaraq, siyasət kənd icmalarına ciddi təsir göstərdi.

    nəticə bağlayıcısı

  • To some extent, this criticism is justified; however, it overlooks recent reforms.

Müəyyən dərəcədə bu tənqid əsaslıdır; lakin son islahatları nəzərə almır.

    hedging + contrast

  • The primary aim of this essay is to evaluate both sides of the debate.

Bu essenin əsas məqsədi mübahisənin hər iki tərəfini qiymətləndirməkdir.

    thesis introduction

  • For instance, a study of 500 employees found no drop in output.

Məsələn, 500 işçi üzərində aparılan araşdırma məhsuldarlıqda azalma aşkar etmədi.

Common mistakes

  • Social media is bad for everyone.

Social media can have negative effects on some users, particularly teenagers.

Həddindən artıq ümumiləşdirmə akademik yazıda zəif təsir bağışlayır. **can, some, particularly** kimi yumşaldıcılar və dəqiqləşdirmə lazımdır.

  • I think that technology is very useful.

It is argued that technology plays a crucial role in modern education.

Akademik üslubda **I think** çox şəxsi səslənir. Passiv və ya obyektiv ifadələr (**It is argued that**) üstünlük təşkil edir.

  • This proves that all students cheat.

This suggests that some students may cheat under pressure.

**Proves** çox qətiyyətli sözdür və çox vaxt dəlil çatmır. **Suggests, may** ilə ehtiyatlı ifadə etmək daha düzgündür.

  • In conclusion, I want to say that pollution is a problem.

In conclusion, pollution remains a pressing issue that requires immediate action.

Nəticədə yeni fikir və ya şəxsi arzu deyil, tezisin yekunu verilməlidir.
