Academic English: critical review

Akademik ingilis dili: tənqidi icmal

After this lesson you can

  • Can summarise an academic source accurately and fairly before evaluating it.
  • Can use a range of evaluative adjectives, reporting verbs and hedges to express critical stance with appropriate caution.
  • Can structure a critical review with a clear introduction, summary, balanced critique and conclusion.

Explanation

What is a critical review?

A critical review summarises and evaluates an academic source. The key principle: understand first, then evaluate. Criticism is not negative comment; it is reasoned, evidence-based judgement.

Structure

  1. Introduction – source, author, topic, purpose of the review.
  2. Summary – a fair, concise account of the main argument.
  3. Evaluation – strengths, weaknesses, methodology, reliability of evidence.
  4. Conclusion – overall judgement and who might benefit.

Evaluative language

  • Strengths: rigorous, compelling, nuanced, well-substantiated, insightful.
  • Weaknesses: limited, unconvincing, overly simplistic, anecdotal, flawed.

Hedging

Academic criticism avoids blunt claims. Use modals (may, might, could ), adverbs ( arguably, somewhat, largely ) and phrases ( it could be argued that, the evidence suggests that). Compare: The author fails to prove his point vs The author does not fully substantiate this claim.

Reporting verbs and stance

Neutral: states, notes, outlines. Evaluative: rightly emphasises, convincingly demonstrates, overlooks, fails to address, overstates.

A good review is balanced: it notes both strengths and weaknesses and links criticism to evidence.

Tənqidi icmal nədir?

Critical review (tənqidi icmal) elmi məqalə, kitab və ya hesabatın həm xülasəsini, həm də qiymətləndirilməsini verən akademik janrdır. Əsas prinsip: əvvəl anla, sonra qiymətləndir. Tənqid "pis demək" deyil; əsaslandırılmış, dəlillərə söykənən qiymətləndirmədir.

Struktur

  1. Introduction – mənbənin adı, müəllifi, mövzusu və icmalın məqsədi.
  2. Summary – əsas arqumentin qərəzsiz, qısa təqdimatı.
  3. Evaluation – güclü cəhətlər, zəif cəhətlər, metodologiya, dəlillərin etibarlılığı.
  4. Conclusion – ümumi hökm və kimə faydalı ola biləcəyi.

Qiymətləndirici dil

  • Güclü cəhətlər: rigorous, compelling, nuanced, well-substantiated, insightful, persuasive.
  • Zəif cəhətlər: limited, unconvincing, overly simplistic, anecdotal, flawed, questionable.
  • Nümunə: *The argument is **compelling *, though the evidence base is somewhat limited.

Ehtiyatlı ifadə (hedging)

Akademik tənqiddə qətiyyətli iddialardan çəkinmək vacibdir. Aşağıdakı vasitələrdən istifadə edin:

  • modal feillər: may, might, could, would appear to
  • zərflər: arguably, seemingly, somewhat, largely, to some extent
  • ifadələr: it could be argued that, there is a tendency to, the evidence suggests that

Müqayisə edin:

  • Çox qəti: The author fails to prove his point.
  • Akademik: The author does not fully substantiate this claim.

Hesabat feilləri və mövqe

Neytral: states, notes, outlines, observes. Qiymətləndirici: rightly emphasises, convincingly demonstrates, overlooks, fails to address, overstates. Bu feillər vasitəsilə mövqeyinizi incə şəkildə bildirirsiniz.

Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə

Azərbaycan dilində tənqid çox vaxt birbaşa ifadə olunur (müəllif bunu sübut edə bilmir). İngilis akademik yazısında isə hedging geniş işlənir: the author does not fully substantiate this claim. Bu, tənqidi yumşaldır və peşəkar ton yaradır.

Balans

Yaxşı icmal birtərəfli olmur: həm güclü, həm zəif cəhətləri qeyd edir. Tənqidi dəlillə əlaqələndirin: This is problematic because the sample was small.

Examples

  • The author presents a compelling case for reform, though the evidence base is somewhat limited.

Müəllif islahatların lehinə inandırıcı arqument təqdim edir, baxmayaraq ki, dəlil bazası bir qədər məhduddur.

    güclü cəhət + ehtiyatlı tənqid

  • While the study rightly emphasises the role of early intervention, it overlooks the influence of socio-economic factors.

Tədqiqat erkən müdaxilənin rolunu haqlı olaraq vurğulasa da, sosial-iqtisadi amillərin təsirini nəzərdən qaçırır.

    tərif + tənqid balansı

  • It could be argued that the conclusions are drawn too hastily from a relatively small sample.

Nəticələrin nisbətən kiçik nümunədən tələsik çıxarıldığını iddia etmək olar.

hedging: it could be argued that

  • The methodology is rigorous, and the findings are well substantiated by longitudinal data.

Metodologiya ciddidir və nəticələr uzunmüddətli məlumatlarla yaxşı əsaslandırılıb.

    müsbət qiymətləndirmə

  • This review will outline the central argument before assessing its methodological strengths and weaknesses.

Bu icmal əsas arqumenti təqdim edəcək, sonra onun metodoloji güclü və zəif cəhətlərini qiymətləndirəcək.

    giriş cümləsi

  • The author overstates the generalisability of the results, which derive from a single case study.

Müəllif tək bir hal araşdırmasından əldə edilən nəticələrin ümumiləşdirilmə imkanlarını şişirdir.

    tənqidi hesabat feili: overstates

  • Overall, the book offers a nuanced and persuasive account, despite occasional lapses into jargon.

Bütövlükdə, kitab arabir jarqona meyl etsə də, incə və inandırıcı təqdimat verir.

    ümumi hökm

Common mistakes

  • The author is wrong because he doesn't prove his point.

The author does not fully substantiate this claim.

Akademik tənqiddə birbaşa 'wrong' və 'doesn't prove' çox kobud səslənir. 'Does not fully substantiate' ehtiyatlı və peşəkar ifadədir.

  • I think this article is very bad and has many problems.

The article has several limitations, most notably its reliance on anecdotal evidence.

'Very bad' subyektiv və qeyri-akademikdir. Tənqidi konkret dəlilə bağlamaq lazımdır.

  • The author says that education is important.

The author argues that education is important.

'Says' neytral və zəifdir. Arqumenti bildirmək üçün 'argues', 'contends', 'maintains' kimi feillər daha uyğundur.

  • The research proves that all students need technology.

The research suggests that many students benefit from technology.

'Proves' çox qəti iddiadır; akademik dildə 'suggests', 'indicates' kimi ehtiyatlı feillər üstünlük təşkil edir.
