Academic English: synthesising sources

Akademik ingilis dili: mənbələri sintez etmək

After this lesson you can

  • Can integrate findings from multiple sources into a coherent argument, showing where they agree, diverge or complement one another.
  • Can use reporting verbs and stance markers to attribute ideas precisely while maintaining a critical distance.
  • Can structure a synthesis paragraph with clear topic sentences, comparative connectors and a synthesised conclusion.

Explanation

What is synthesis?

Synthesis is not listing sources one by one; it is connecting them to build a new, unified picture. In academic writing, the aim is to answer "what do these sources mean together?" rather than "who said what?".

Three ways to combine sources

  1. Agreement: Both A and B argue that ... / This view is echoed by C, who ...
  2. Contrast: Whereas A contends that ..., B maintains the opposite.
  3. Extension: Building on A's findings, B ...

Weak vs strong synthesis

Weak: Smith (2019) says X. Jones (2020) says Y. (listing) Strong: Although Smith (2019) and Jones (2020) agree that X, they part company on Y; Brown (2021) reconciles the two by showing that ...

Language tools

  • Comparison: similarly, likewise, in the same vein
  • Contrast: conversely, by contrast, whereas, notwithstanding
  • Conclusion: taken together, on balance, the weight of evidence points to ...
  • Critical distance: arguably, ostensibly, it is far from clear that ...

Keeping your own voice

Use hedged stance markers: While the evidence is compelling, it remains unclear whether ...

Practical steps

  1. Extract the main claim from each source.
  2. Group sources by agreement or disagreement.
  3. Give one synthesising idea per paragraph, then support it with sources.
  4. Use connectors to smooth transitions.
  5. Conclude with Taken together, ... or On balance, ....

Sintez nədir?

Sintez tək-tək mənbələri sadalamaq deyil, onları bir-biri ilə əlaqələndirərək yeni, vahid mənzərə yaratmaqdır. Akademik yazıda məqsəd oxucuya "kim nə demiş" sualından çox "bunlar birlikdə nə deməkdir" sualına cavab verməkdir.

Mənbələri birləşdirməyin üç yolu

  1. Razılaşma: Both A and B argue that ... / This view is echoed by C, who ...
  2. Ziddiyyət: Whereas A contends that ..., B maintains the opposite. / This claim is at odds with ...
  3. Tamamlama: A's analysis of X is extended by B, who ... / Building on A's findings, B ...

Nümunə: zəif və güclü sintez

Zəif: Smith (2019) says X. Jones (2020) says Y. Brown (2021) says Z. (sadalama) Güclü: Although Smith (2019) and Jones (2020) agree that X, they part company on Y; Brown (2021) reconciles the two by showing that ...

Dil vasitələri

  • Müqayisə: similarly, likewise, in the same vein, both ... and ...
  • Ziddiyyət: conversely, by contrast, whereas, whilst, notwithstanding, this notwithstanding
  • Nəticə/ümumiləşdirmə: taken together, these studies suggest ..., on balance, the weight of evidence points to ...
  • Tənqidi məsafə: arguably, purportedly, ostensibly, it is far from clear that ...

Mövqe bildirmə

Sintez edərkən öz səsinizi də qorumalısınız: While the evidence is compelling, it remains unclear whether ... Bu cür ifadələr həm mənbəyə hörmət, həm də tənqidi düşüncə nümayiş etdirir.

Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə

Azərbaycan dilində "həm ... həm də", "bir tərəfdən ... digər tərəfdən" kimi qurğular sintezdə geniş işlənir. İngilis dilində isə daha çox cümləüstü bağlayıcılar (discourse markers) və mürəkkəb isim ifadələri (complex noun phrases) vasitəsilə sıx, akademik üslub yaradılır. Məsələn: the growing body of evidence, a widely held assumption, the divergent conclusions reached by researchers.

Praktik addımlar

  1. Hər mənbədən əsas tezisi çıxar.
  2. Mənbələri mövzuya görə qruplaşdır (razılaşanlar, ziddiyyət təşkil edənlər).
  3. Hər paraqrafda bir sintez ideyası ver, sonra onu mənbələrlə dəstəklə.
  4. Bağlayıcılardan istifadə edərək keçidləri hamar et.
  5. Yekunda Taken together, ... və ya On balance, ... ilə ümumi nəticə çıxar.

Examples

  • While Hassan (2018) attributes the decline to economic factors, Petrova (2020) places the emphasis on institutional failure; the two positions are not, however, irreconcilable.

Həsən (2018) enişi iqtisadi amillərlə izah etsə də, Petrova (2020) əsas diqqəti institusional uğursuzluğa yönəldir; lakin bu iki mövqe bir-biri ilə uzlaşmaz deyil.

    ziddiyyət + uzlaşma

  • Taken together, these studies suggest that early intervention is effective, albeit to a lesser degree than originally claimed.

Birlikdə götürüldükdə, bu tədqiqatlar erkən müdaxilənin təsirli olduğunu göstərir, hərçənd ilkin iddia edildiyindən daha az dərəcədə.

    ümumiləşdirmə

  • This view is echoed by Larsen (2021), who extends the argument to include digital media.

Bu fikri Larsen (2021) də təkrarlayır və arqumenti rəqəmsal medianı da əhatə edəcək şəkildə genişləndirir.

    tamamlama

  • It is far from clear that the two sets of findings can be reconciled without further empirical work.

Əlavə empirik tədqiqat olmadan bu iki qrup nəticənin uzlaşdırıla biləcəyi heç də aydın deyil.

    tənqidi məsafə

  • Whereas the earlier literature focuses on individual behaviour, more recent work shifts the analytical lens to structural constraints.

Əvvəlki ədəbiyyat fərdi davranışa fokuslansa da, daha yeni işlər analitik baxışı struktur məhdudiyyətlərə yönəldir.

    müqayisə

  • On balance, the weight of evidence points to a modest but consistent effect.

Ümumilikdə, sübutların çəkisi mülayim, lakin ardıcıl bir təsirə işarə edir.

Common mistakes

  • Smith says that the results are significant. Jones says that the results are significant. Brown says that the results are significant.

Smith, Jones and Brown all report significant results, although they differ in how they interpret them.

Eyni fikri tək-tək təkrarlamaq sintez deyil, sadalamadır. Oxşar mənbələri bir cümlədə birləşdirin.

  • According to me, the evidence is weak.

In my view, the evidence is weak. / The evidence is arguably weak.

'According to me' ingilis dilində işlənmir. Öz fikriniz üçün 'In my view' və ya 'arguably' kimi ifadələr seçin.

  • The research of Smith is very important and the research of Jones is also very important.

Both Smith's and Jones's research is important, though for different reasons.

Sahiyə aid isimlərə yiyəlik '-s' əlavə etmək və 'both ... and ...' qurğusundan istifadə etmək daha təbii və akademik səslənir.

  • Smith (2019) tells that the policy failed.

Smith (2019) argues that the policy failed.

Akademik mətndə 'tell' əvəzinə 'argue, contend, maintain, assert' kimi reporting feilləri işlədilir.

  • Although Smith agrees with Jones, but Brown disagrees.

Although Smith agrees with Jones, Brown disagrees.

İngilis dilində 'although' və 'but' eyni cümlədə birlikdə işlənmir.
