Professional English: diplomatic language
Peşəkar ingilis dili: diplomatik dil
After this lesson you can
- Can use a range of hedging devices (modal verbs, adverbs, impersonal constructions) to soften requests, criticism and disagreement in professional settings.
- Can employ face-saving strategies such as passive voice, nominalisation and indirect questions to maintain cordiality while conveying unwelcome messages.
- Can adjust the level of directness according to power relations, cultural expectations and the sensitivity of the topic.
Explanation
What is diplomatic language?
Diplomatic language is professional communication that is both clear and polite, designed to convey messages without causing offence and to protect the other person's "face". It is essential in formal correspondence, international negotiations and management.
Key strategies
- Hedging – softening statements with modals (** could, might, may ), adverbs ( perhaps, possibly, somewhat ) and phrases ( It seems that..., I'm afraid...**). Example: This proposal might need some refinement.
- Passive voice – deflecting responsibility: A mistake was made in the report.
- Nominalisation – turning verbs into nouns to sound formal and less confrontational: You failed to deliver. → There appears to have been a delay in delivery.
- Indirect questions and conditionals: Would you mind clarifying...? If you could provide..., we would be grateful.
- "We" instead of "I" – collective or institutional stance: We are concerned that...
Degrees of directness
Use a bit, slightly, to some extent to weaken; use I would strongly encourage..., We would very much appreciate... to emphasise politely.
Written vs spoken
Written diplomatic language relies more on passive and nominalisation; spoken language uses softeners (Actually, I think...; To be fair...) and intonation.
The key principle: be polite without losing clarity.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Diplomatik dil nədir?
Diplomatik dil (diplomatic language) eyni vaxtda həm **aydın **, həm də nəzakətli olmağı tələb edən peşəkar ünsiyyət üsuludur. Məqsəd qarşı tərəfi incitmədən, onun "üzünü qoruyaraq" (face-saving) mesajı çatdırmaqdır. Bu, xüsusilə rəsmi yazışmalarda, beynəlxalq danışıqlarda və idarəetmə mühitində vacibdir.
Əsas üsullar
-
Hedcinq (hedging) – fikri qətiyyətdən çıxarıb yumşaltmaq:
- Modal feillər: could, might, may, would.
- Zərflər: perhaps, possibly, somewhat, rather, a little.
- Yumşaldıcı ifadələr: It seems that..., I'm afraid..., We would suggest that...
- Misal: This proposal might need some refinement. (Bu təklif bir qədər təkmilləşdirmə tələb edə bilər.)
-
Passiv quruluşlar – məsuliyyəti obyektə yönəltmək:
- A mistake was made in the report. (Hesabatda səhvə yol verilib.) – kimin etdiyi göstərilmir.
- It has been decided that... (Qərara alınıb ki...)
-
Nominalizasiya – feili ismə çevirərək ifadəni rəsmiləşdirmək və yumşaltmaq:
- We need to improve communication. → There is a need for improvement in communication.
- You failed to deliver. → There appears to have been a delay in delivery.
-
Dolayı suallar və şərt cümlələri:
- Would you mind clarifying...? (Dəqiqləşdirmək istərdinizmi?)
- If you could provide..., we would be grateful.
-
"I" yerinə "we" – kollektiv məsuliyyət və ya institusional mövqe:
- We are concerned that... (Narahatıq ki...)
Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə
Azərbaycan dilində də nəzakət üçün "-ardı", "-ərdi" (istək şəkli), "zəhmət olmasa", "mümkünsə" kimi vasitələr var. Lakin ingilis dilində hedcinq daha geniş yayılıb və cümlənin strukturuna daxil olur. Məsələn, Azərbaycan dilində "Siz haqlı deyilsiniz" kəskin səslənə bilər, ingilis dilində isə I'm not sure I quite follow your reasoning (Mühakimənizi tam başa düşmürəm) daha diplomatikdir.
Tonu gücləndirmək və zəiflətmək
- Zəiflətmə: a bit, slightly, to some extent, arguably.
- Gücləndirmə (nəzakətli təkid): I would strongly encourage..., We would very much appreciate...
Yazılı və şifahi fərqlər
Yazılı diplomatik dildə passiv və nominalizasiya daha çox işlənir; şifahi nitqdə isə yumşaldıcı ifadələr (Actually, I think...; To be fair...) və səs tonu mühüm rol oynayır.
Praktik qayda
Diplomatik dil "yalan" deyil; o, həqiqəti qarşı tərəfin qəbul edə biləcəyi formada çatdırır. Əsas prinsip: aydınlığı itirmədən nəzakətli olmaq.
Examples
We would suggest that the deadline be reviewed.
Son tarixin yenidən nəzərdən keçirilməsini təklif edərdik.
passiv + would → yumşaq təklif
I'm afraid there may have been a slight misunderstanding.
Qorxuram ki, kiçik bir anlaşılmazlıq olub.
I'm afraid + may have been → hedcinq
It has been decided that the meeting will be postponed.
İclasın təxirə salınması qərara alınıb.
passiv, məsuliyyəti gizlədir
Would you mind elaborating on that point?
Bu məqamı bir az da izah edərdinizmi?
dolayı sual
There appears to have been a delay in delivery.
Görünür, çatdırılmada gecikmə olub.
nominalizasiya + passiv
We are somewhat concerned about the tone of the report.
Hesabatın tonundan bir qədər narahatıq.
somewhat → yumşaldıcı
If you could provide the figures by Friday, we would be grateful.
Rəqəmləri cümə gününə qədər təqdim etsəniz, minnətdar olarıq.
şərt cümləsi ilə nəzakətli xahiş
Common mistakes
You are wrong about the budget.
I'm not sure I quite agree with your assessment of the budget.
Birbaşa "you are wrong" kəskindir. Diplomatik dildə fikir ayrılığı yumşaq ifadə olunur.
Send me the report immediately.
Could you possibly send me the report at your earliest convenience?
Əmr forması əvəzinə modal + nəzakətli ifadə işlədilir.
We reject your proposal.
We are unable to accept the proposal in its current form.
"Reject" kəskin səslənir; "unable to accept" daha diplomatikdir.
I think you made a mistake.
It seems there may have been an error.
Şəxsi ittiham əvəzinə passiv və hedcinq işlədilir.
