Vocabulary: collocation mastery
Leksika: kollokasiya mükəmməlliyi
After this lesson you can
- Can select the precise verb, adjective or noun that naturally collocates with a given headword in formal and informal contexts.
- Can distinguish between near-synonymous collocations that differ in register, intensity or pragmatic force.
- Can correct collocational errors in their own and others' writing without altering the intended meaning.
Explanation
What is collocation?
Collocation is the natural tendency of words to occur together. We say **make a decision **, not do a decision. Collocational errors often do not change meaning, but they make the sentence sound unnatural.
Why it matters at C2
At this level, errors usually come from choosing the wrong near-synonym:
- heavy rain (not strong rain)
- strong wind (not heavy wind)
- make a mistake and do harm are fixed.
Main types
- **Verb + noun **: **reach a conclusion **, **draw a distinction **, raise concerns.
- **Adjective + noun **: **a vested interest **, a moot point.
- **Noun + noun **: **a surge in demand **, a lapse in judgement.
- **Adverb + adjective/verb **: **deeply concerned **, widely regarded.
Register and intensity
Some collocations are neutral, others are formal or emphatic:
- ask a question (neutral) → pose a question (formal)
- very angry (neutral) → furious (strong)
- a big problem (neutral) → a pressing problem (formal)
Learning tip
Learn words in collocations, not alone: reach an agreement, meet a deadline. Check the examples in a dictionary and note doubtful combinations in your own writing.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Kollokasiya nədir?
Kollokasiya iki və ya daha çox sözün dilin təbii istifadəsində tez-tez birlikdə işlənməsidir. Məsələn, make a decision deyilir, do a decision deyil. Azərbaycan dilində də belə uyğunluqlar var: **qərar vermək **, amma qərar etmək yox. İngilis dilində kollokasiya səhvi mənanı çox vaxt dəyişmir, lakin cümləni qeyri-təbii göstərir.
Nə üçün C2 səviyyəsində vacibdir?
C2 səviyyəsində səhv çox vaxt yaxın sinonimlərin yanlış seçilməsindən yaranır. Məsələn:
- heavy rain (güclü yağış) düzgündür, strong rain yox.
- strong wind düzgündür, heavy wind yox.
- make a mistake və do harm düzgündür, əksinə işlədilmir.
Əsas növlər
- **Feil + isim **: **reach a conclusion **, **draw a distinction **, raise concerns.
- **Sifət + isim **: **a vested interest **, **a moot point **, a foregone conclusion.
- **İsim + isim **: **a surge in demand **, a lapse in judgement.
- **Zərf + sifət/feil **: **deeply concerned **, **widely regarded **, strongly opposed.
Üslub və intensivlik
Bəzi kollokasiyalar neytral, bəziləri isə güclü emosional və ya rəsmi çalar daşıyır:
- ask a question (neytral) → pose a question (rəsmi, akademik)
- very angry (neytral) → furious (güclü)
- a big problem (neytral) → a pressing problem (rəsmi)
Azərbaycan dilindən təsir
Azərbaycan dilində etmək feli çox işlənir: qərar etmək, təklif etmək, kömək etmək. İngilis dilində bunlar fərqli feillərlə verilir: **make a decision **, **make a suggestion **, give help. Buna görə də hər isim üçün hansı feilin işləndiyini ayrıca öyrənmək lazımdır.
Necə öyrənməli?
- Sözü tək yox, kollokasiya ilə yadda saxlayın: reach an agreement, meet a deadline.
- Lüğətdə sözün yanındakı nümunələrə baxın.
- Öz yazılarınızda şübhəli birləşmələri qeyd edib sonra yoxlayın.
