Fronting and information focus
Cümlə üzvünün önə çəkilməsi və informasiya fokusu
After this lesson you can
- Can move less common sentence elements to the front for emphasis, contrast or cohesion.
- Can apply the end-weight principle to keep heavy noun phrases at the end of the clause.
- Can use inversion after fronted negative or restrictive adverbials accurately.
- Can identify and correct awkward or ungrammatical fronting in formal and literary texts.
Explanation
Fronting means moving a sentence element (object, adverbial, complement) to the front for emphasis, contrast or cohesion. Neutral English follows subject + verb + object order, so fronting is marked and mostly used in formal, literary or journalistic style.
Common types:
- Object fronting: Her latest novel I found disappointing.
- Adverbial fronting with inversion: Down the hill came a group of children.
- Negative adverbials with inversion: Never have I seen such a mess., Not only did he apologise, but he also paid.
End-weight keeps long, heavy phrases at the end: I was amazed by the number of people who turned up is better than The number of people who turned up amazed me.
Use fronting sparingly. Too much fronting makes speech sound unnatural.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Fronting nədir?
- Neytral: I have never seen such a mess.
- Fronted: Never have I seen such a mess.
Nə üçün istifadə olunur?
- Vurğu və kontrast: This book I can recommend to everyone. (bu kitabı, başqalarını yox)
- Mövzu bağlılığı (cohesion): əvvəlki cümlədəki məlumatı təkrarlamamaq üçün.
- Ritm və üslub: ədəbi və publisistik mətnlərdə.
Əsas növləri
- Obyektin önə çəkilməsi: Her latest novel I found disappointing. (adi: I found her latest novel disappointing.)
- Zərfin önə çəkilməsi: Down the hill came a group of children. (inversiya ilə)
- Predikativin önə çəkilməsi: Strange as it may seem, he agreed.
- Mənfi zərflərdən sonra inversiya: Rarely does she complain., Not only did he apologise, but he also paid for the damage.
End-weight prinsipi
İngilis dilində ağır (uzun) üzvlər cümlənin sonuna doğru yerləşir. Buna end-weight deyilir. Fronting edərkən bu prinsipi pozmamaq lazımdır.
- Yaxşı: I was amazed by the number of people who turned up.
- Pis: The number of people who turned up amazed me. (ağır mübtəda əvvəldə)
İnversiya qaydaları
Mənfi və ya məhdudlaşdırıcı zərflər (**never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, no sooner, not only, little, nowhere **) cümlənin əvvəlinə keçdikdə köməkçi feil mübtədadan əvvəl gəlir:
- Never have I seen such behaviour.
- No sooner had he left than it started raining.
- Little did she know about the plan.
Diqqət: inversiya yalnız bu zərflər cümlənin əvvəlində olduqda baş verir. Əgər zərf ortada qalırsa, adi sıra qalır: She rarely complains.
Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə
Azərbaycan dilində söz sırası nisbətən sərbəstdir və vurğu əsasən sözlə intonasiya ilə verilir. İngilis dilində isə söz sırası sərtdir, ona görə də fronting xüsusi üslub vasitəsi kimi qəbul edilir və hər cümlədə işlədilmir. Fronting çox işlədilsə, nitq təbii olmaqdan çıxır.
Examples
Never have I read such a compelling argument.
Heç vaxt belə inandırıcı bir arqument oxumamışam.
mənfi zərfdən sonra inversiya
Her latest collection I found rather uneven.
Onun son kolleksiyasını kifayət qədər qeyri-bərabər hesab etdim.
obyektin önə çəkilməsi
Rarely does she raise her voice, even under pressure.
O, hətta təzyiq altında belə nadir hallarda səsini qaldırır.
rarely + köməkçi feil
Not only did the team miss the deadline, but they also exceeded the budget.
Komanda təkcə son tarixi qaçırmadı, həm də büdcəni aşdı.
not only ... but also
Down the corridor came the sound of laughter.
Dəhlizdən gülüş səsi gəlirdi.
yer zərfinin önə çəkilməsi + inversiya
Strange as it may seem, the proposal was accepted without debate.
Nə qədər qəribə görünsə də, təklif müzakirəsiz qəbul edildi.
predikativin önə çəkilməsi
I was struck by the number of volunteers who gave up their weekend.
Həftə sonunu könüllülərə həsr edən insanların sayı məni heyrətləndirdi.
end-weight prinsipi
Common mistakes
Never I have seen such a beautiful sunset.
Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.
Mənfi zərf (never) cümlənin əvvəlində olduqda köməkçi feil (have) mübtədadan əvvəl gəlməlidir.
Rarely she complains about her workload.
Rarely does she complain about her workload.
Rarely əvvəldədirsə, köməkçi feil (does) lazımdır. Əgər rarely ortada qalsa, adi sıra düzgündür: She rarely complains.
The number of people who attended the lecture was impressive to me.
I was impressed by the number of people who attended the lecture.
Ağır mübtəda (the number of people who attended the lecture) cümlənin əvvəlində duranda cümlə ağırlaşır. End-weight prinsipinə görə uzun ifadəni sona keçirmək daha təbiidir.
Not only he apologised, but he also paid for the damage.
Not only did he apologise, but he also paid for the damage.
Not only cümlənin əvvəlində olduqda inversiya tələb olunur: did he apologise.
This book I can recommend it to everyone.
This book I can recommend to everyone.
Obyekt önə çəkildikdə əvəzlik (it) təkrar işlədilmir, çünki obyekt artıq cümlənin əvvəlindədir.
