Explanation
A and an
Use a or an before a singular countable noun. Use an before a vowel sound: **an apple **, **an egg **. Use a before a consonant sound: **a book **, **a car **. The sound is important: an hour (h is silent), a university (u sounds like 'yu').
Plural nouns
Add -s to most nouns: **book → books **. Add -es after -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o: **bus → buses **, **watch → watches **. For consonant + y, change y to **-ies **: **baby → babies **. For vowel + y, just add **-s **: boy → boys.
Irregular plurals
Some nouns are irregular: **man → men **, **woman → women **, **child → children **, **foot → feet **, **tooth → teeth **, person → people.
In sentences
Use a/an with singular nouns: This is a book. Do not use a/an with plural nouns: These are books. (Not These are a books.)

İngilis dilində tək sayıla bilən isimdən əvvəl a və ya an qoyulur. Bu, Azərbaycan dilindəki "bir" sözünə uyğundur, amma həmişə "bir" kimi tərcümə olunmur.

Sait + y ilə bitən isimlərdə -y düşür və -ies olur: **baby → babies **, **city → cities **. Amma samit + y olduqda sadəcə **-s **: **boy → boys **, day → days.
Qaydasız cəmlər
Bəzi isimlər qaydaya uyğun deyil: **man → men **, **woman → women **, **child → children **, **foot → feet **, **tooth → teeth **, person → people.
Cümlədə işlənməsi
Tək isimdən əvvəl a/an mütləqdir: This is a book. Cəm isimlərdən əvvəl a/an işlədilmir: These are books. (Səhv: These are a books.)
Tipik səhvlər
Azərbaycan dilində "bir" sözü çox vaxt buraxılır, ona görə şagirdlər a/an-ı unudur: This is book əvəzinə This is a book lazımdır. Həmçinin cəm isimlərdən əvvəl a/an işlətmək səhvdir.
