Question tags and indirect questions
Təsdiq sualları (question tags) və dolayı suallar
After this lesson you can
- Can form question tags with different tenses and auxiliaries.
- Can ask polite indirect questions such as Could you tell me where ...?
- Can use correct word order in indirect questions.
Explanation
Question tags
A positive sentence takes a negative tag, and a negative sentence takes a positive tag. Use the same auxiliary verb (or do/does/did): You live here, don't you? She can't drive, can she? Special cases: I'm late, aren't I? Let's start, shall we?
Indirect questions
They are more polite: Could you tell me ...? Do you know ...? I wonder ... After these phrases, use statement word order and no do/does/did: Do you know where she lives? (not where does she live). For yes/no questions, use if or whether: Can you tell me if the museum is open?
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
1. Question tags
Azərbaycan dilində cümlənin sonuna sadəcə elə deyil? və ya hə? əlavə edirik. İngilis dilində isə tag cümlənin köməkçi felinə və zamanına uyğun dəyişir.
Qayda: təsdiq cümlə → inkar tag; inkar cümlə → təsdiq tag.
- You're a student, aren't you?
- She doesn't eat meat, does she?
- They went home, didn't they?
- You've been to Gabala, haven't you?
- He can swim, can't he?
- It'll be fine, won't it?
Köməkçi fel yoxdursa (Present/Past Simple), do/does/did işlənir. Tagdakı əvəzlik subyektə uyğun olmalıdır: Your brother is tall, isn't he?
Xüsusi hallar: I'm right, aren't I? (amn't I deyil). Let's go, shall we?
İntonasiya: səs aşağı düşürsə, təsdiq gözləyirik; yuxarı qalxırsa, həqiqətən soruşuruq.
2. Dolayı suallar
Birbaşa sual bəzən kobud səslənə bilər. Nəzakət üçün giriş ifadəsi işlədirik:
- Could you tell me ...? / Do you know ...? / I wonder ... / Can I ask ...?
Ən vacib qayda: söz sırası nəqli cümlədəki kimidir və do/does/did işlənmir:
| Birbaşa | Dolayı |
|---|---|
| Where is the bank? | Could you tell me where the bank is? |
| What time does the shop open? | Do you know what time the shop opens? |
| Did he call? | Do you know if/whether he called? |
Sual sözü yoxdursa (yes/no sualı), if və ya whether əlavə olunur.
Tipik səhv
Öyrənənlər birbaşa sualın sırasını saxlayırlar: Can you tell me where is the station?, düzgün: where the station is.
Examples
It's really hot today, isn't it?
Bu gün çox istidir, elə deyil?
You haven't seen my glasses, have you?
Eynəyimi görməmisən, hə?
Your sister lives in Sumgait, doesn't she?
Bacın Sumqayıtda yaşayır, elə deyil?
Could you tell me where the nearest pharmacy is?
Ən yaxın aptekin harada olduğunu deyə bilərsinizmi?
Do you know what time the last metro leaves?
Son metro qatarının saat neçədə yola düşdüyünü bilirsiniz?
I wonder if they will accept my application.
Görəsən, müraciətimi qəbul edəcəklər?
Can you tell me whether breakfast is included?
Səhər yeməyinin daxil olub-olmadığını deyə bilərsiniz?
Common mistakes
Could you tell me where is the bus stop?
Could you tell me where the bus stop is?
Dolayı sualda söz sırası nəqli cümlədəki kimidir: subject + verb.
Do you know what time does the film start?
Do you know what time the film starts?
Dolayı sualda does işlənmir, fel üçüncü şəxs -s alır.
You are tired, isn't it?
You are tired, aren't you?
Tag subyektə və köməkçi felə uyğun olmalıdır. Azərbaycan dilindəki 'elə deyil?' hər yerdə eynidir, ingilis dilində yox.
She likes tea, isn't she?
She likes tea, doesn't she?
Present Simple cümlədə tag does/doesn't ilə düzəlir.
Do you know is he coming?
Do you know if he is coming?
Yes/no sualı dolayı olanda if/whether lazımdır və söz sırası dəyişir.
