Reading: finding the main idea

Oxu: əsas fikri tapmaq

After this lesson you can

  • Can identify the main idea of a short article.
  • Can recognise topic sentences and supporting details in paragraphs.
  • Can distinguish between the main idea and specific examples.

Explanation

Main idea

The main idea is the most important point the writer wants to make. Details, numbers and examples support it.

Strategies

  1. Read the title.
  2. Read the first sentence of each paragraph (the topic sentence).
  3. Look carefully at the introduction and conclusion.
  4. Notice signal words: however (contrast), for example (detail), overall (summary).
  5. Don't stop at every unknown word.

Skimming = reading quickly for the general idea. Scanning = looking for specific information.

In tests, wrong answers are often too narrow (one detail), too broad, or not stated in the text.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Əsas fikir nədir?

Main idea, müəllifin oxucuya çatdırmaq istədiyi ən vacib fikirdir. O, adətən bir cümlə ilə ifadə oluna bilər. Detallar (rəqəmlər, nümunələr, sitatlar) isə bu fikri dəstəkləyir.

Strategiyalar

  1. Başlığa və alt başlığa baxın. Onlar çox vaxt mövzunu göstərir.
  2. Hər abzasın ilk cümləsini oxuyun. İngilis dilində yazılmış məqalələrdə abzasın əsas fikri adətən birinci cümlədə olur, buna topic sentence deyilir.
  3. Giriş və nəticə abzaslarına diqqət edin. Müəllif əsas fikri çox vaxt girişdə təqdim edir, sonda isə təkrarlayır.
  4. Siqnal sözləri tapın: however, but (fikir dəyişir), for example, such as (detal gəlir), overall, in conclusion (yekun).
  5. Hər sözü bilmək lazım deyil. Naməlum sözləri kontekstdən təxmin edin.

Skimming və scanning

  • Skimming, ümumi fikir üçün mətni tez nəzərdən keçirmək.
  • Scanning, konkret məlumatı (ad, rəqəm, tarix) axtarmaq.

Əsas fikri tapmaq üçün skimming lazımdır.

Tipik çətinlik

Azərbaycanlı oxucular bəzən mətni sözbəsöz tərcümə etməyə çalışır və vaxt itirirlər. Həmçinin Azərbaycan dilində yazı üslubunda əsas fikir çox vaxt sonda gəlir, ingilis dilində isə adətən əvvəldə. Buna görə ilk cümlələrə xüsusi diqqət yetirin.

Yanlış cavab tələləri

Testlərdə tez-tez belə variantlar olur:

  • çox dar, yalnız bir detala aiddir;
  • çox geniş, mətndən daha ümumi mövzudan danışır;
  • mətndə olmayan, məntiqli görünür, amma müəllif bunu demir.

Examples

  • The first sentence of a paragraph usually tells you what it is about.

Abzasın birinci cümləsi adətən onun nədən bəhs etdiyini göstərir.

  • For example, one company saved 30% on office costs.

Məsələn, bir şirkət ofis xərclərində 30% qənaət etdi.

    Detal: əsas fikir deyil

  • However, not everyone enjoys working from home.

    Lakin hamı evdən işləməyi sevmir.

    however fikrin dəyişdiyini göstərir

  • Overall, the writer believes that a mix of home and office work is best.

Ümumilikdə, müəllif hesab edir ki, ev və ofis işinin qarışığı ən yaxşısıdır.

  • Skim the text first, then read it again more carefully.

Əvvəlcə mətni tez nəzərdən keçirin, sonra daha diqqətlə yenidən oxuyun.

  • The main idea of the article is that remote work has both benefits and costs.

Məqalənin əsas fikri budur ki, uzaqdan işləmənin həm üstünlükləri, həm də çatışmazlıqları var.

Reading text: Is the Office Dead?

A few years ago, working from home was a rare privilege. Today, millions of people do it every week, and many companies are asking a difficult question: do we still need an office? For many employees, the benefits of remote work are clear. They no longer spend hours on a stressful commute, and they can organise their day in a more flexible way. Parents, in particular, say that it is easier to combine work and family life. Some companies have also saved money. One technology firm, for example, reduced its office space by half and used the savings to increase salaries. However, the picture is not entirely positive. In a recent survey of 2,000 workers, almost 40% said they felt isolated when they worked from home for long periods. Young employees often miss the chance to learn from experienced colleagues by watching and listening to them. Others find it hard to set a clear boundary between work and rest, so they end up answering emails late at night. Productivity is another area where opinions are divided. Some managers report that their teams achieve more at home because there are fewer interruptions. Others believe that creative ideas come more easily when people meet face to face, chat over coffee and solve problems together. Because of these mixed results, a growing number of organisations are choosing a hybrid model. Employees spend two or three days in the office for meetings and teamwork, and the rest of the week at home for focused tasks. This approach is not perfect, but it may offer the best of both worlds. So, is the office dead? Probably not. It is simply changing. In the future, the office may become less a place where we sit all day and more a place where we go to connect with other people.

Common mistakes

  • The main idea is that one company saved 30%.

The main idea is that remote work has advantages and disadvantages.

Rəqəm və ya nümunə detaldır, əsas fikir deyil.

  • Translating every word before understanding the whole text.

Skimming the text first to get the general idea.

Sözbəsöz tərcümə vaxt aparır və əsas fikri itirməyə səbəb olur.

  • Choosing an answer because it sounds true in real life.

Choosing an answer that the text actually says.

Cavab mətnə əsaslanmalıdır, şəxsi fikrə yox.
