Professional English: meetings basics

Peşəkar ingilis dili: iclasların əsasları

After this lesson you can

  • Can open, run and close a simple meeting using standard phrases.
  • Can give opinions, agree and disagree politely in a meeting.
  • Can interrupt, ask for clarification and summarise action points.

Explanation

Useful phrases

  • Opening: Shall we get started? The purpose of this meeting is to ... There are three items on the agenda.
  • Opinions: In my view ... I'd suggest that we ...
  • Agreeing/disagreeing: That's a good point. I see what you mean, but ... I'm afraid I see it differently.
  • Interrupting/clarifying: Sorry to interrupt, but ... Could you clarify ...?
  • Closing: To sum up, we've agreed to ... Who will take care of this? Let's wrap up.

In English business culture, soften disagreement with I'm afraid, I'm not sure, perhaps. Say I agree (not I am agree) and discuss the plan (not discuss about).

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

İclasın quruluşu

İngilisdilli iş mühitində iclaslar adətən bu ardıcıllıqla gedir: açılış → gündəlik (agenda) → müzakirə → qərarlar → tapşırıqlar (action points) → bağlanış.

1. Açılış

  • Shall we get started? / Let's get down to business.
  • The purpose of today's meeting is to ...
  • There are three items on the agenda.

2. Fikir bildirmək

  • I think / In my view / From my point of view ...
  • I'd suggest that we ... / How about ...?

3. Razılaşmaq və nəzakətlə razılaşmamaq

İngilis iş mədəniyyətində birbaşa No, you're wrong demək çox kobud səslənir. Razılaşmamanı yumşaltmaq lazımdır:

  • Razılaşma: I completely agree. / That's a good point.
  • Qismən: I see what you mean, but ... / You have a point, however ...
  • Razılaşmama: I'm not sure I agree. / I'm afraid I see it differently.

Azərbaycan dilində iclaslarda fikri daha birbaşa demək normal ola bilər, lakin ingilis dilində **I'm afraid **, **I'm not sure **, perhaps kimi yumşaldıcı sözlər çox vacibdir.

4. Sözü kəsmək və aydınlaşdırmaq

  • Sorry to interrupt, but ... / Can I just add something?
  • Could you clarify what you mean by ...?
  • Sorry, I didn't quite catch that.

5. Yekunlaşdırmaq və tapşırıqlar

  • So, to sum up, we've agreed to ...
  • Who's going to take care of this?
  • Rauf will send the report by Friday., tapşırıqlar üçün will və ya going to.
  • Let's wrap up here. Thanks, everyone.

Onlayn iclaslar

  • Can everyone hear me? / You're on mute. / Could you share your screen? / Sorry, you broke up for a second.

Tipik səhv

I am agree, agree feldir, be lazım deyil: I agree. Həmçinin discuss about yox, discuss (birbaşa obyekt ilə).

Examples

  • Shall we get started? Everyone's here now.

    Başlayaqmı? Artıq hamı buradadır.

  • The purpose of today's meeting is to discuss the new budget.

Bugünkü iclasın məqsədi yeni büdcəni müzakirə etməkdir.

  • I see what you mean, but I think the deadline is too tight.

Nə demək istədiyinizi başa düşürəm, amma məncə, müddət çox sıxdır.

  • Sorry to interrupt, but could I add something here?

Sözünüzü kəsdiyim üçün üzr istəyirəm, buraya bir şey əlavə edə bilərəm?

  • Could you clarify what you mean by 'phase two'?

'İkinci mərhələ' dedikdə nəyi nəzərdə tutduğunuzu aydınlaşdıra bilərsiniz?

  • To sum up, we've agreed to launch the app in March.

Yekunlaşdırsaq, tətbiqi martda istifadəyə verməyə razılaşdıq.

  • Leyla will send everyone the minutes by tomorrow.

Leyla sabahadək hamıya iclas protokolunu göndərəcək.

Common mistakes

  • I am agree with you.

    I agree with you.

agree feldir; Azərbaycan dilindəki 'razıyam' quruluşuna görə be əlavə etmək səhvdir.

  • Let's discuss about the budget.

    Let's discuss the budget.

discuss birbaşa obyekt qəbul edir, about lazım deyil. (talk about isə düzgündür.)

  • You are wrong. This plan is bad.

I'm afraid I see it differently. I have some concerns about this plan.

İngilis iş mühitində birbaşa razılaşmama kobud səslənir; yumşaldıcı ifadələr işlədin.

  • Can you repeat? I didn't understand nothing.

Sorry, could you repeat that? I didn't quite catch it.

İngilis dilində ikiqat inkar işlənmir; həmçinin nəzakətli forma daha uyğundur.
