Reading: short everyday texts

Oxu: qısa gündəlik mətnlər

After this lesson you can

  • Can understand short everyday texts such as notices, adverts, messages and emails.
  • Can scan a text quickly to find specific information (times, prices, places).
  • Can identify the purpose of a short text (to inform, to invite, to warn, to sell).

Explanation

Text types

At A2 you often read notices (rules, warnings, changes), adverts (sales, courses, jobs), text messages and short emails.

Strategies

  1. Find the purpose: who wrote it, to whom, and why? Look at the title and form. Warning, Sale, Wanted tell you a lot.
  2. Scan: don't read every word. Know what you are looking for (a time, a price, a name) and look for it.
  3. Watch small words: except, only, until, free, closed can change the meaning. Open every day except Sunday means you can't go on Sunday.

Don't translate word by word. Understand the general idea first, then look at details. Guess new words from context.

Gündəlik mətnlərin növləri

A2 səviyyəsində ən çox rast gəldiyimiz mətnlər qısa olur, amma çoxlu konkret məlumat daşıyır:

  • notice (elan), qayda, xəbərdarlıq, dəyişiklik: The library will be closed on Monday.
  • advert (reklam), satış, kurs, iş: English classes for adults. First lesson free!

Məsələn, mətndə "The pool is open every day except Sunday" yazılıb. Sual: "You can swim on Sunday", False, çünki except = "istisna olmaqla".

Diqqət ediləsi kiçik sözlər: except (-dan başqa), only (yalnız), until (-a qədər), free (pulsuz / boş), closed (bağlı).

Bilmədiyiniz sözlər

Hər sözü lüğətdə axtarmayın. Əvvəlcə kontekstdən təxmin edin. Azərbaycan dilinə oxşar beynəlxalq sözlər (museum, programme, centre, café) çox kömək edir.

Tipik çətinlik

Azərbaycanlı oxucular çox vaxt mətni sözbəsöz tərcümə etməyə çalışır və vaxt itirir. Əvvəlcə ümumi mənanı tutun, sonra detallara qayıdın.

Examples

  • The museum is open every day except Monday.

Muzey bazar ertəsindən başqa hər gün açıqdır.

    except = -dan başqa

  • Entry is free for children under 7.

7 yaşdan kiçik uşaqlar üçün giriş pulsuzdur.

  • Please keep this door closed.

Zəhmət olmasa, bu qapını bağlı saxlayın.

  • Sale! 30% off all winter coats until Friday.

Endirim! Cümə gününə qədər bütün qış paltolarına 30% endirim.

  • Wanted: part-time waiter for a busy café.

Tələb olunur: işlək kafe üçün yarımştat ofisiant.

  • Running late, see you at 7:30 instead of 7.

Gecikirəm, saat 7 yox, 7:30-da görüşərik.

Common mistakes

  • Reading every word slowly and translating it.

Reading for the main idea first, then scanning for details.

Sözbəsöz tərcümə vaxt aparır və ümumi mənanı itirməyə səbəb olur.

  • "Free" always means "no money".

"Free" can mean "no money" or "not busy" (Are you free tonight?).

free sözünün iki mənası var: pulsuz və boş/məşğul olmayan. Kontekstə baxın.

  • Ignoring small words like 'except' or 'only'.

Paying attention to except, only, until, not.

Bu kiçik sözlər cümlənin mənasını tamamilə dəyişə bilər.

  • Choosing an answer because it has the same word as the text.

Checking that the meaning is the same, not just the word.

Testlərdə eyni söz çox vaxt tələ kimi işlədilir.
