  • Can ask for and give simple directions in a town (turn left, go straight on, it's on your right).
  • Can talk about means of transport with by, on and take.
  • Can use basic travel vocabulary at a station, airport or hotel.

Explanation

Asking the way

Excuse me, how do I get to the station? Is there a bank near here? Could you tell me the way to the museum?

Giving directions

Go straight on. Turn left/right. Take the second turning on the left. Go past the bank. Cross the road. It's on your left. It's on the corner / at the end of the street. The imperative is normal and polite here.

Transport

  • by bus/car/train/plane/metro (no article), but on foot
  • take the bus, take a taxi
  • get on/off a bus or train
  • get in/out of a car or taxi

Don't say with bus.

Travel words

single/return ticket, platform, departure, arrival, delay, check in, boarding pass, book a room, reservation, check out.

  • take + the: take the bus, take a taxi
  • get on / get off (avtobus, qatar, təyyarə): Get off at the third stop.
  • get in / get out of (maşın, taksi): Get in the car!

✗ with bus, Azərbaycan dilindəki "avtobusla" şəkilçisini with kimi tərcümə etməyin. Doğrusu: by bus.

Common mistakes

  • I come to work with bus.

    Nəqliyyat növü 'by' ilə ifadə olunur (artiklsız).

  • Turn to left at the bank.

    turn left/right, 'to' olmadan.

  • I went there by foot.

    I went there on foot.

    Piyada = on foot.

  • We got down from the bus.

    We got off the bus.

    Avtobusdan, qatardan düşmək = get off.

  • Can you say me the way to the museum?

    Can you tell me the way to the museum?

    'demək' feilini 'say' kimi tərcümə etməyin: kiməsə nəyisə demək/izah etmək = tell someone.
