Common English idioms
Geniş yayılmış ingilis idiomları
After this lesson you can
- Can understand and use around ten frequent English idioms in everyday contexts
- Can guess the meaning of an unfamiliar idiom from context
- Can recognise that idioms are fixed and usually cannot be translated word for word
Explanation
An idiom is a fixed expression whose meaning is not the sum of its words: It's raining cats and dogs = it's raining heavily.
Rules: idioms are fixed (don't change the words), but the verb changes tense; don't translate idioms word for word from Azerbaijani; most are informal, so avoid them in academic essays.
Key idioms: break the ice, under the weather, a piece of cake, cost an arm and a leg, hit the nail on the head, once in a blue moon, let the cat out of the bag, on the same page, the last straw, get cold feet.
When you meet a new idiom, use the context to guess its meaning.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
İdiom nədir?
İdiom, mənası ayrı-ayrı sözlərin mənasından çıxmayan sabit ifadədir. It's raining cats and dogs pişik və itlə bağlı deyil, sadəcə leysan yağır deməkdir. Azərbaycan dilində də belə ifadələr çoxdur: qulağının dibini qaşımaq, ağzı süd qoxuyur.
Əsas qaydalar
- İdiomlar sabitdir. Sözləri dəyişmək olmaz: break the ice (✗ break the cold).
- Sözbəsöz tərcümə etməyin. Azərbaycan idiomunu ingilis dilinə birbaşa çevirmək çox vaxt anlaşılmır. Məsələn, başım qarışıqdır, my head is mixed yox, I'm up to my eyes *** və ya sadəcə *** I'm really busy.
- Feil zamanı dəyişir: She broke the ice, He's been under the weather.
- Üslub. Çoxu qeyri-rəsmidir; akademik essedə idiomlardan çəkinin.
Bu dərsin idiomları
| İdiom | Mənası | Azərbaycanca yaxın |
|---|---|---|
| break the ice | gərginliyi aradan qaldırmaq | söhbətə başlamaq, buzu sındırmaq |
| under the weather | bir az xəstə | özünü yaxşı hiss etməmək |
| a piece of cake | çox asan | su içmək kimi |
| cost an arm and a leg | çox baha olmaq | od qiymətinə |
| hit the nail on the head | tam dəqiq demək | düz hədəfə vurmaq |
| once in a blue moon | çox nadir | ildə-ayda bir |
| let the cat out of the bag | sirri açmaq | ağzından qaçırmaq |
| on the same page | eyni fikirdə | eyni dalğada |
| the last straw | səbr kasasını daşıran | son damla |
| get cold feet | son anda qorxmaq | ayağı soyumaq |
Maraqlıdır ki, bəzi idiomlar iki dildə oxşardır (the last straw ≈ son damla), bəziləri isə tam fərqlidir.
Kontekstdən təxmin
