Hedging and softening language

Ehtiyatlı ifadə və yumşaltma dili (hedging)

After this lesson you can

  • Can use modal verbs, adverbs and introductory phrases to make claims more cautious in academic writing
  • Can soften criticism, disagreement and requests in professional situations
  • Can recognise when a statement is too absolute and rewrite it appropriately

Explanation

In academic writing, absolute claims sound weak. Hedging makes them cautious:

  • modals: may, might, could
  • verbs: seem, appear, tend to, suggest, indicate
  • adverbs/adjectives: possibly, probably, likely, generally, to some extent
  • quantity: most/many instead of all, often instead of always
  • phrases: It could be argued that..., There is some evidence that...

At work, softening makes criticism and requests polite: I'm not sure this is quite right. It might not be the best idea. Would you mind...? I was wondering if... Use a bit, slightly, rather to reduce force. Don't overuse hedging, or you will sound unclear.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Hedging nə üçündür?

Akademik ingilis dilində qəti iddialar (This proves that..., All people...) zəif və ya qeyri-peşəkar görünür. Elmi yazıda müəllif ehtiyatlı olmalıdır, çünki nəticələr çox vaxt məhdud məlumata əsaslanır. Azərbaycan dilində də ola bilsin ki, güman ki, müəyyən dərəcədə deyirik, amma ingilis akademik dilində bu, daha sistemli işlədilir.

1. Modal feillər

may, might, could, would, This may explain the difference.

2. Ehtiyat feilləri

seem, appear, tend, suggest, indicate, The results suggest that..., Young people tend to use social media more., It appears that...

3. Zərflər və sifətlər

possibly, probably, perhaps, likely, apparently, generally, relatively, to some extent, It is likely that prices will rise.

4. Miqdarı yumşaltmaq

**all → most / many **, **always → often / usually **, never → rarely. Many students... əvəzinə All students... deməyin.

5. Giriş ifadələri

It could be argued that..., *** There is some evidence that..., *** To some extent,..., *** In most cases,...***

Peşəkar ünsiyyətdə yumşaltma

İş yerində birbaşa tənqid kobud səslənə bilər:

BirbaşaYumşaldılmış
This is wrong.I'm not sure this is quite right.
You're late.It seems we've started a bit late.
I disagree.I see your point, but ...
Send it now.Would you mind sending it now?
It's a bad idea.It might not be the best idea.

Başqa vasitələr: a bit, slightly, quite, rather; inkar + müsbət sifət (not very good əvəzinə not ideal); keçmiş zaman (I was wondering if...).

Diqqət: həddən artıq hedging

It might possibly perhaps be... kimi cümlələr qeyri-müəyyən səslənir. Bir cümlədə bir-iki vasitə kifayətdir.
