Advanced phrasal verbs

Mürəkkəb frazal feillər

After this lesson you can

  • Can understand and use B2-level phrasal verbs for work, relationships and problems
  • Can place objects correctly with separable and inseparable phrasal verbs
  • Can use three-part phrasal verbs such as come up with and put up with

Explanation

Phrasal verbs combine a verb and particle(s) and often have a completely new meaning. Learn them as whole units.

  • Separable: the object can go before or after the particle, but a pronoun must go in the middle: turn the offer down / turn it down (not turn down it). Examples: turn down, bring up, carry out, put off, call off, figure out.
  • Inseparable: the object always follows: come across it, look into it, get over it, take after her.
  • Three-part: come up with, put up with, look forward to (+ -ing), run out of, get away with, cut down on.

Many are polysemous (bring up = raise a child / mention a topic). In formal writing, single verbs may be better: carry out → conduct, put off → postpone.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Frazal feil nədir?

Feil + hissəcik (up, out, off, down və s.) birləşməsidir və mənası çox vaxt tamamilə yenidir: give (vermək) + up = give up (imtina etmək, əl çəkmək). Azərbaycan dilində bunun birbaşa qarşılığı yoxdur, ona görə frazal feilləri bütöv söz kimi öyrənmək lazımdır.

1. Ayrılan (separable) frazal feillər

Tamamlıq hissəcikdən əvvəl və ya sonra gələ bilər:

  • She turned down the offer. / She turned the offer down.
  • Amma tamamlıq əvəzlikdirsə (it, them, him), mütləq ortada durur: She turned it down. (✗ turned down it) Nümunələr: turn down, bring up, carry out, put off, call off, figure out, point out, set up.

2. Ayrılmayan (inseparable) frazal feillər

Tamamlıq həmişə sonda: I came across an old photo. / I came across it. Nümunələr: come across, look into, get over, take after, run into.

3. Üç hissəli frazal feillər

Feil + iki hissəcik; tamamlıq həmişə sonda:

  • come up with (fikir tapmaq), She came up with a brilliant idea.
  • put up with (dözmək), I can't put up with this noise.
  • look forward to (səbirsizliklə gözləmək), I'm looking forward to seeing you. (diqqət: to + -ing)
  • get away with (cəzasız qalmaq), run out of (qurtarmaq), catch up with (çatmaq), cut down on (azaltmaq), face up to (üz-üzə gəlmək).

4. Çoxmənalılıq

Eyni frazal feilin bir neçə mənası ola bilər:

  • bring up: uşaq böyütmək (She was brought up in Lankaran) və mövzu açmaq (Don't bring up politics at dinner).
  • pick up: götürmək, maşınla dalınca getmək, dili tədricən öyrənmək (I picked up some Turkish on holiday).

5. Rəsmi ekvivalentlər

Rəsmi yazıda bəzən tək söz daha uyğundur: carry out → conduct, put off → postpone, find out → discover, look into → investigate.
