Academic collocations
Akademik söz birləşmələri
After this lesson you can
- Can use common academic verb + noun collocations such as conduct research and draw a conclusion.
- Can use adjective + noun collocations such as significant impact and key factor.
- Can avoid direct translations from Azerbaijani that produce unnatural word combinations.
Explanation
Collocations are words that naturally go together. Make research may seem logical, but English says conduct or carry out research. Using correct collocations makes academic writing sound natural and professional.
Azerbaijani often uses general verbs like etmək or vermək, but English nouns have their own verbs: draw a conclusion, play a role, pay attention, raise a question, address an issue, pose a threat, meet a requirement.
Useful adjective + noun pairs include significant impact, key factor, major concern, widespread belief, growing evidence, compelling evidence. Adverb + adjective pairs include highly effective, widely used, closely related. Learn new nouns together with their typical verbs and adjectives. Remember that research and evidence are uncountable.
Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah
Kollokasiya nədir?
Kollokasiya – təbii şəkildə birlikdə işlənən sözlərdir. Qrammatik cəhətdən make research düzgün görünə bilər, amma ingilis dilində deyilən conduct / carry out research-dür. Akademik yazıda kollokasiyalar mətni peşəkar və təbii edir.
