Commonly confused words
Tez-tez qarışdırılan sözlər
After this lesson you can
- Can distinguish between commonly confused pairs such as affect/effect, rise/raise and economic/economical.
- Can avoid false friends that Azerbaijani speakers often misuse.
- Can choose the correct word in exam-style multiple-choice tasks.
Explanation
Some English words are easily confused: affect (verb) vs effect (noun); rise (no object) vs raise (needs an object); lie (recline) vs lay (put something down); economic (about the economy) vs economical (saving money); sensible vs sensitive; borrow vs lend; remember vs remind; advice (noun) vs advise (verb).
False friends look like Azerbaijani or Russian words but mean something different: a magazine is a journal, not a shop; actual means real, not topical; sympathetic means understanding, not attractive; fabric is cloth, not a factory; familiar means well known, not surname. Learn each pair with an example sentence and use grammar clues to choose.
