Advanced word formation

Mürəkkəb söz yaradıcılığı

After this lesson you can

  • Can form nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs from a single root word.
  • Can choose the correct negative prefix (un-, in-, im-, il-, ir-, dis-, mis-).
  • Can complete exam-style word formation tasks, including spelling changes.

Explanation

One root can produce several parts of speech: succeed → success → successful → successfully. Learn whole word families, because suffix choice is often not predictable.

Verbs can be formed with -en (widen), -ise (modernise), -ify (simplify) and en- (enable). Negative prefixes include un-, in-, im- (before p, m, b), il- (before l), ir- (before r), dis-, mis- (wrongly) and non-. Other prefixes change meaning: over-, under-, re-, co-, pre-, post-.

Watch spelling: y → i (happiness), dropping final e (creative), doubling consonants (beginner).

In exam tasks, look at the words around the gap to decide the part of speech, check whether the meaning needs to be negative, and check whether the noun should be plural.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Söz ailələri

Bir kökdən bir neçə nitq hissəsi yaranır:

FelİsimSifətZərf
succeedsuccesssuccessfulsuccessfully
differdifferencedifferentdifferently
relyreliabilityreliablereliably
strengthenstrengthstrongstrongly

Azərbaycan dilində də şəkilçilər eyni işi görür (uğur – uğurlu – uğurla), amma ingilis dilində şəkilçi seçimi çox vaxt qaydaya yox, sözə bağlıdır – ona görə söz ailələrini bütöv öyrənmək lazımdır.

Fel yaradan şəkilçilər

  • -en: wide → widen, short → shorten, strength → strengthen
  • -ise/-ize: modern → modernise, real → realise
  • -ify: simple → simplify, pure → purify
  • en-: able → enable, courage → encourage

İnkar prefiksləri

  • un-: unlikely, unaware, unemployment
  • in-: inaccurate, insufficient
  • im- (p, m, b qarşısında): impossible, immature
  • il- (l qarşısında): illegal, illogical
  • ir- (r qarşısında): irrelevant, irresponsible
  • dis-: disagree, dishonest, disadvantage
  • mis- (səhv): misunderstand, mislead
  • non-: non-existent, non-profit

Mənanı dəyişən digər prefikslər

over- (həddən artıq): overestimate; under- (az): underpaid; re- (yenidən): rebuild; co- (birgə): co-author; pre-/post-: pre-war, postgraduate.

İmla dəyişiklikləri

  • -y → -i: happy → happiness, rely → reliable
  • Son -e düşür: create → creative, argue → argument (amma manage → management)
  • Samit qoşalaşır: begin → beginner, forget → forgettable

İmtahan strategiyası

  1. Boşluqdan əvvəl və sonrakı sözə baxın: artikldan sonra isim, isimdən əvvəl sifət, feldən sonra zərf gəlir.
  2. Mənaya baxın: cümlə inkar məna tələb edirmi?
  3. Cəm forması lazımdırmı? (many difficulties)
