Explanation
When a negative or limiting expression is moved to the start of a sentence for emphasis, the subject and auxiliary are inverted, as in a question: Never have I seen such a view. If there is no auxiliary, add do/does/did: Rarely do I go out.
Common triggers: never, rarely, seldom, not only… but also, no sooner… than, hardly/scarcely… when, under no circumstances, on no account, little. With not until, only when, only after, the inversion is in the main clause: Not until I read the letter did I understand.
Inversion is formal and dramatic. Use it in essays, speeches and stories, but not too often. No sooner pairs with than; hardly pairs with when, usually with the Past Perfect.
