Advanced tense and aspect choices

Zaman və aspekt seçimləri: incə fərqlər

After this lesson you can

  • Can choose between perfect and non-perfect forms to express completion, relevance and duration precisely.
  • Can use narrative tenses (past simple, past continuous, past perfect, past perfect continuous) to control foreground and background in a story.
  • Can use future forms (will, going to, present continuous, future perfect, future continuous) to convey prediction, arrangement, intention and deadline.
  • Can recognise and correct aspect errors typical of Azerbaijani speakers, such as overusing the present perfect for finished past events.

Explanation

Tense and aspect

Tense shows when something happens; aspect shows how: completed, ongoing, or connected to another time. English uses perfect (have + past participle) and continuous (be + -ing) to express aspect.

Perfect aspect

  • Present perfect: past action with present relevance. I have lost my keys.
  • Past perfect: earlier past. The film had started before we arrived.
  • Future perfect: completed by a future time. I will have finished by June.

Continuous aspect

  • Present perfect continuous: ongoing or just stopped. I have been reading all morning.
  • Past perfect continuous: ongoing before a past point. They had been waiting for hours.

Narrative tenses

Use past continuous for background and past simple for main events: I was walking home when I saw a light. Use past perfect for earlier events: He realised he had left his passport.

Future forms

  • will: decision, promise, prediction
  • going to: intention, evidence-based prediction
  • present continuous: arrangement
  • future continuous: in progress at a future time
  • future perfect: completed by a future time

Azerbaijani speaker pitfalls

Do not use present perfect with a finished past time: I have seen him yesterday → I saw him yesterday. State verbs (know, believe, own) are not used in continuous forms.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Zaman və aspekt nədir?

Tense hadisənin vaxtını (keçmiş, indi, gələcək), aspect isə onun necə davam etdiyini və ya tamamlandığını göstərir. İngilis dilində aspekt əsasən perfect (have + V3) və continuous (be + V-ing) quruluşları ilə ifadə olunur. Azərbaycan dilində belə sistematik aspekt fərqi yoxdur, ona görə də bu, azərbaycanlılar üçün ən çətin mövzulardan biridir.

Perfect aspekt: bitmişlik və əlaqə

Present perfect keçmişdə baş verib indi ilə əlaqəsi olan hadisələr üçün işlənir:

  • I have lost my keys. (indi axtarıram, açar yoxdur)
  • She has lived here for ten years. (hələ də burada yaşayır)

Past perfect keçmişdəki başqa bir hadisədən əvvəl baş verən hərəkəti göstərir:

  • When we arrived, the film had already started. (film biz gəlməzdən əvvəl başlamışdı)

Future perfect gələcəkdə müəyyən vaxta qədər tamamlanacaq hərəkət üçün:

  • By next June, I will have finished my thesis.

Continuous aspekt: davamlılıq və müvəqqətilik

Present perfect continuous hərəkətin davam etdiyini və ya yenicə bitdiyini vurğulayır:

  • I have been reading your report all morning. (hələ də oxuyuram və ya yenicə bitirdim)
  • She has been working here since 2020.

Past perfect continuous keçmişdəki bir nöqtədən əvvəl davam edən hərəkət:

  • They had been waiting for hours when the bus finally came.

Hekayə zamanları: ön plan və arxa plan

Hekayə danışarkən past continuous arxa planı (davam edən vəziyyət), past simple isə əsas hadisələri (ön plan) verir:

  • I was walking home when I saw a strange light in the sky.
  • While she was cooking, the phone rang.

Past perfect isə daha əvvəlki hadisələri göstərir:

  • He realised he had left his passport at home.

Gələcək formalar: çalarlar

  • will: qərar, vəd, proqnoz (I'll help you.)
  • going to: niyyət, sübuta əsaslanan proqnoz (Look at those clouds. It's going to rain.)
  • present continuous: razılaşdırılmış plan (I'm meeting the director tomorrow.)
  • future continuous: gələcəkdə müəyyən anda davam edən hərəkət (This time tomorrow, I'll be flying to London.)
  • future perfect: müəyyən vaxta qədər bitmiş hərəkət (By 5 p.m., we will have sent the proposal.)

Azərbaycan dilindən fərqlər

Azərbaycan dilində "-mış" şəkilçisi həm bitmiş keçmişi, həm də təcrübəni bildirir. İngilis dilində isə:

  • I have visited Paris. (təcrübə, indi ilə əlaqə)
  • I visited Paris last year. (konkret keçmiş vaxt)

Qayda: konkret keçmiş vaxt ifadəsi (yesterday, last week, in 2019) varsa, past simple işlədin, present perfect yox.

Tipik səhvlər

  • I have seen him yesterday. → I saw him yesterday.
  • She is knowing the answer. → She knows the answer. (state feilləri continuous-da işlənmir)
  • When I arrived, he already left. → When I arrived, he had already left.

Examples

  • By the time the guests arrived, she had been cooking for six hours.

Qonaqlar gələndə o, artıq altı saatdır ki, yemək bişirirdi.

past perfect continuous: keçmişdəki bir nöqtədən əvvəl davam edən hərəkət

  • I have been trying to reach you all morning. Where have you been?

Səhərdən səni tapmağa çalışıram. Harada idin?

present perfect continuous: davam edən və ya yenicə bitən hərəkət

  • This time next week, we will be presenting our findings to the board.

Gələn həftə bu vaxt biz nəticələrimizi komissiyaya təqdim edir olacağıq.

future continuous: gələcəkdə müəyyən anda davam edən hərəkət

  • She was about to leave when the phone rang.

O, getmək üzrə idi ki, telefon zəng çaldı.

past continuous + past simple: arxa plan və əsas hadisə

  • I had never seen such a breathtaking view before that trip.

O səfərdən əvvəl heç vaxt belə heyrətamiz mənzərə görməmişdim.

past perfect: keçmişdəki bir nöqtədən əvvəlki təcrübə

  • Don't call at eight. I will be having dinner with my family then.

Səkkizdə zəng etmə. O vaxt mən ailəmlə nahar edir olacağam.

future continuous: gələcəkdə müəyyən anda davam edən hərəkət

  • He has been working here since 2015, and he still loves it.

O, 2015-ci ildən burada işləyir və hələ də bunu sevir.

present perfect continuous: indiyə qədər davam edən hərəkət

Common mistakes

  • I have seen him yesterday.

    I saw him yesterday.

Konkret keçmiş vaxt (*yesterday*) varsa, **past simple** işlədin. Present perfect indi ilə əlaqəli, vaxtı göstərilməyən hadisələr üçündür.

  • She is knowing the answer.

    She knows the answer.

**State feilləri** (know, believe, own, seem) adətən continuous formada işlənmir, çünki onlar davam edən hərəkət deyil, vəziyyət bildirir.

  • When I arrived, he already left.

When I arrived, he had already left.

Keçmişdəki bir hadisədən əvvəl baş verən hərəkət üçün **past perfect** lazımdır: had + V3.

  • I am living here since 2010.

I have been living here since 2010.

Keçmişdə başlayıb indiyə qədər davam edən hərəkət üçün **present perfect continuous** işlədin, present continuous yox.

  • By next year, I will finish my studies.

By next year, I will have finished my studies.

Gələcəkdə müəyyən vaxta qədər tamamlanan hərəkət üçün **future perfect** (will have + V3) lazımdır.
