Mixed and implied conditionals
Qarışıq və gizli şərt cümlələri
After this lesson you can
- Can form mixed conditionals where the time in the if-clause and the result clause differs.
- Can recognise and use implied conditionals (but for, otherwise, supposing, provided that) without an explicit if.
- Can choose appropriate conditional alternatives (were to, should, had) to adjust formality and likelihood.
Explanation
What are mixed conditionals?
In standard conditionals, both clauses refer to the same time. In mixed conditionals, the if-clause and the result clause refer to different times. There are two main types:
1. Past condition → present result If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. Form: if + past perfect, would + infinitive.
2. Present condition → past result If she were more careful, she wouldn't have made that mistake. Form: if + past simple, would have + past participle.
Implied conditionals
Sometimes there is no if; the condition is expressed differently:
- But for + noun = if it were not for / if it had not been for: But for your help, I would have failed.
- Otherwise = if not: Leave now; otherwise you'll miss the train.
- Supposing / Imagine = what if: Supposing you lost your job, what would you do?
- Provided that / as long as / on condition that = only if: You can go, provided that you finish your homework.
- Were it not for / Had it not been for (formal inversion): Had it not been for the rain, we would have arrived on time.
Alternative conditional forms
- Were to + infinitive for unlikely future conditions: If you were to ask him, he would probably say no.
- Should + subject (formal): Should you need any help, please contact me.
- Had + subject (formal past): Had I known, I would have acted differently.

Qarışıq şərt cümlələri nədir?
Adi şərt cümlələrində hər iki hissə eyni zamana aiddir: If I had known, I would have told you. (keçmiş + keçmiş). Qarışıq şərt cümlələrində isə if bir zamana, nəticə başqa zamana aiddir. İki əsas növ var:
1. Keçmiş şərt → indiki nəticə If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. (Keçmişdə tibb oxumadım, indi həkim deyiləm.) Forma: if + past perfect, would + infinitive.
2. İndiki şərt → keçmiş nəticə If she were more careful, she wouldn't have made that mistake. (O, ümumiyyətlə diqqətli deyil, ona görə keçmişdə səhv etdi.) Forma: if + past simple, would have + past participle.
Gizli (implied) şərt cümlələri
Bəzən if işlədilmir, şərt başqa sözlərlə ifadə olunur:
- But for + noun = if it were not for / if it had not been for: But for your help, I would have failed.
- Otherwise = if not: Leave now; otherwise you'll miss the train.
- Supposing / Imagine = what if: Supposing you lost your job, what would you do?
- Provided that / as long as / on condition that = yalnız bu şərtlə: You can go, provided that you finish your homework.
- Were it not for / Had it not been for (rəsmi, inversiya ilə): Had it not been for the rain, we would have arrived on time.
Şərt cümlələrinin alternativ formaları
- Were to + infinitive: gələcəkdə çox az ehtimallı şərt: If you were to ask him, he would probably say no.
- Should + subject (rəsmi): Should you need any help, please contact me.
- Had + subject (keçmiş üçün rəsmi): Had I known, I would have acted differently.
Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə
Azərbaycan dilində şərt cümlələri əsasən -sa/-sə şəkilçisi ilə qurulur və zaman uyğunluğu sərbəstdir: Oxusaydım, həkim olardım. İngilis dilində isə zaman formaları ciddi şəkildə nəzarət olunur. Xüsusilə qarışıq şərtlərdə would + have + V3 və would + V1 arasındakı fərqi qarışdırmaq olmaz.
Tipik səhvlər
- If I would have known əvəzinə If I had known.
- If I was you danışıqda mümkündür, amma rəsmi yazıda If I were you üstünlük təşkil edir.
- Qarışıq şərtlərdə hər iki hissədə eyni zamanı işlətmək: If I had studied, I would have been a doctor now yanlışdır, çünki now indiki nəticə tələb edir: would be.
Examples
If I had taken that job, I would be living in Berlin now.
O işi qəbul etsəydim, indi Berlində yaşayırdım.
keçmiş şərt → indiki nəticə
If he weren't so stubborn, he would have accepted the offer.
O bu qədər inadkar olmasaydı, təklifi qəbul edərdi.
indiki xarakter → keçmiş nəticə
But for the traffic, we would have caught the ferry.
Tıxac olmasaydı, bərəyə çatardıq.
but for = if it had not been for
I'll lend you the car provided that you drive carefully.
Diqqətli sürsən, maşını sənə verərəm.
provided that = yalnız bu şərtlə
Had it not been for her support, the project would have collapsed.
Onun dəstəyi olmasaydı, layihə dağılardı.
rəsmi inversiya
Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Hər hansı sualınız olarsa, soruşmaqdan çəkinməyin.
rəsmi should inversiyası
Supposing you were offered the position, would you accept it?
Tutaq ki, sizə bu vəzifə təklif olundu, qəbul edərdiniz?
supposing = what if
Write it down; otherwise you'll forget.
Yaz, əks halda unudacaqsan.
otherwise = if not
Common mistakes
If I would have known, I would have told you.
If I had known, I would have told you.
İngilis dilində if hissəsində **would have** işlədilmir; keçmiş üçün **had + V3** lazımdır.
If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam now.
If I had studied harder, I would pass the exam now.
**now** indiki nəticə tələb edir, ona görə **would + V1** olmalıdır.
But for your help, I would fail.
But for your help, I would have failed.
**But for** keçmişə aid olduqda nəticə də keçmiş olur: **would have + V3**.
If I was you, I would apologise.
If I were you, I would apologise.
Rəsmi və yazılı üslubda **were** üstünlük təşkil edir; danışıqda **was** da eşidilir, amma imtahanda **were** daha düzgün sayılır.
Provided that you will finish your work, you can leave.
Provided that you finish your work, you can leave.
Şərt cümlələrində gələcək üçün **will** işlədilmir; əvəzinə present simple gəlir.
