Participle clauses

Feli sifət cümləcikləri (Participle clauses)

After this lesson you can

  • Can use present and past participle clauses to replace relative clauses and adverbial clauses.
  • Can choose the correct participle form to express active or passive meaning and sequence of events.
  • Can avoid dangling participles and use perfect participles for earlier actions.

Explanation

Participle clauses are shortened clauses that replace relative or adverbial clauses. They use either a present participle (-ing) for active meaning or a past participle (V3) for passive meaning. For example, The man who is standing there becomes The man standing there. Because she was tired becomes Being tired. Use having + past participle when the first action happened before the main action: Having finished the report, he left. Make sure the participle clause and the main clause share the same subject, otherwise you create a dangling participle: Walking down the street, the trees were beautiful is wrong because trees cannot walk. In Azerbaijani, similar ideas are expressed with suffixes like -araq/-ərək or -ıb/-ib, but English requires the participle form and subject agreement.

Azərbaycan dilində ətraflı izah

Giriş

Participle clauses (feli sifət cümləcikləri) cümlədə əlavə məlumat verən qısa cümləciklərdir. Onlar tam cümlələri (relative clauses, adverbial clauses) əvəz edərək nitqi daha rəsmi və yığcam edir. İki əsas növ var:

  • Present participle (-ing forması): aktiv məna, davam edən hərəkət.
  • Past participle (V3): passiv məna, tamamlanmış hərəkət.

Növləri

  1. Relative clause əvəzi (sifət cümləciyi):
    • The man who is standing there is my uncle. → The man standing there is my uncle.
    • The book which was written by Orwell is famous. → The book written by Orwell is famous.
  2. Adverbial clause əvəzi (zərf cümləciyi):
    • Because she was tired, she went to bed early. → Being tired, she went to bed early.
    • After he had finished the report, he left. → Having finished the report, he left.
  3. Perfect participle (** having + V3**): əsas hərəkətdən əvvəl baş verən hərəkəti bildirir.
    • Having eaten, we went out. (Yeməkdən sonra çıxdıq.)
  4. **Passive participle **: being + V3 (davam edən passiv) və ya sadəcə V3 (tamamlanmış passiv).
    • Being watched by everyone, she felt nervous.
    • Written in 1920, the novel is still popular.

Mübtəda qaydası (dangling participle)

Cümləciyin mübtədası əsas cümlənin mübtədası ilə eyni olmalıdır. Əks halda dangling participle yaranır:

  • Walking down the street, the trees were beautiful. (Səhv: ağaclar yerimir.)
  • Walking down the street, I saw beautiful trees. (Düzgün.)

Azərbaycan dili ilə müqayisə

Azərbaycan dilində belə cümləciklər **-araq/-ərək **, **-ıb/-ib **, -anda şəkilçiləri ilə verilir: Yorulub yatdı → Being tired, he went to bed. İngilis dilində isə feli sifət forması işlənir və mübtəda uyğunluğu vacibdir.

Diqqət ediləcək məqamlar

  • Present participle yalnız aktiv mənada işlənir: The boy playing football (oynayan oğlan).
  • Past participle passiv mənada: The window broken by the storm (fırtına ilə sınmış pəncərə).
  • Ardıcıllıq: əgər birinci hərəkət əvvəl baş veribsə, having + V3 işlədin.
  • Rəsmi yazıda participle clauses tez-tez rast gəlinir, danışıqda isə daha sadə quruluşlar üstünlük təşkil edir.

Examples

  • The woman sitting by the window is my aunt.

    Pəncərənin yanında oturan qadın xalamdır.
