The subjunctive and formal structures

Subjunktiv və rəsmi quruluşlar

After this lesson you can

  • Can use the mandative subjunctive (base form) after verbs and adjectives of demand, suggestion and necessity in formal contexts.
  • Can form negative and passive subjunctive structures correctly.
  • Can use formal inverted conditionals (Should you need..., Had I known...) and fixed subjunctive phrases.
  • Can distinguish between subjunctive and indicative forms and choose the appropriate register.

Explanation

What is the subjunctive?

The mandative subjunctive is used in formal English after verbs and adjectives of demand, suggestion, necessity or wish. After **that **, the verb does not change for person or tense; it is always the base form.

Verbs: demand, insist, suggest, propose, recommend, request, require, ask, urge, order, command. Adjectives: essential, important, necessary, vital, crucial, imperative, advisable, desirable.

Examples:

  • The committee demanded that he resign immediately. (not resigns)
  • It is essential that every applicant submit the form by Friday.
  • They insisted that the meeting be postponed. (not is)

Negative and passive

Negative: not before the base verb: She insisted that he not attend. Passive: be + past participle: The board requested that the report be submitted by Monday.

Formal inversion

In formal writing and speech, if-clauses can be replaced by inversion:

  • Should + subject + base verb: Should you need any assistance, please contact us.
  • Had + subject + past participle: Had I known about the delay, I would have taken a different route.
  • Were + subject + to + base verb: Were the government to raise taxes, there would be protests.

Fixed subjunctive phrases

Some expressions always use the subjunctive: Long live the Queen!, God save the King!, Be that as it may, Come what may, Suffice it to say, If need be.

Subjunctive vs indicative

Some verbs allow both, with a change in register: I suggest that he go. (subjunctive, formal) vs I suggest that he goes. (indicative, less formal, especially British English).

Azerbaijani has no such distinction; the verb changes for person. In formal English, the verb remains unchanged.

Subjunktiv nədir?

Mandative subjunctive (əmr subjunktivi) rəsmi ingilis dilində tələb, təklif, zərurət və ya arzu bildirən fellərdən və sifətlərdən sonra işlənir. Bu quruluşda **that **-dan sonra gələn feil şəxsə və zamana görə dəyişmir; həmişə base form (feilin əsas forması) olur.

Səsləndirən fellər: demand, insist, suggest, propose, recommend, request, require, ask, urge, order, command. Sifətlər: essential, important, necessary, vital, crucial, imperative, advisable, desirable.

Nümunələr:

  • The committee demanded that he resign immediately. (he resign, he resigns deyil)
  • It is essential that every applicant submit the form by Friday.
  • They insisted that the meeting be postponed. (be, is deyil)

İnkar və passiv

İnkar üçün not əsas feildən əvvəl gəlir: She insisted that he not attend the meeting. Passiv subjunktiv: be + past participle: The board requested that the report be submitted by Monday.

Rəsmi inversiya (formal inversion)

Rəsmi yazıda və nitqdə if-li şərt cümlələri əvəz edən inversiya quruluşları var:

  • Should + subject + base verb: Should you need any assistance, please contact us. (= If you should need...)
  • Had + subject + past participle: Had I known about the delay, I would have taken a different route. (= If I had known...)
  • Were + subject + to + base verb: Were the government to raise taxes, there would be protests. (= If the government were to raise...)

Sabit subjunktiv ifadələr

Bəzi ifadələr həmişə subjunktivlə işlənir:

  • Long live the Queen! (Yaşasın kraliça!)
  • God save the King!
  • Be that as it may (Hər halda, belə olsa da)
  • Come what may (Nə olursa olsun)
  • Suffice it to say (Demək kifayətdir)
  • If need be (Lazım olsa)

Subjunktiv və indikativ fərqi

Bəzi fellər həm subjunktiv, həm də indikativ qəbul edir, amma məna dəyişir:

  • I suggest that he go. (subjunktiv, rəsmi)
  • I suggest that he goes. (indikativ, daha az rəsmi, xüsusilə Britaniya ingiliscəsində)

Azərbaycan dilində belə fərq yoxdur; biz "tələb etdi ki, o getsin" deyirik və feil şəxsə görə dəyişir. İngilis dilində isə rəsmi üslubda feil dəyişməz qalır.

Tipik səhvlər

  • He suggested that she goes. → He suggested that she go. (rəsmi)
  • It is important that he is informed. → It is important that he be informed.
  • If I would have known... → Had I known... (rəsmi inversiya)
  • Should you will need... → Should you need... (should-dan sonra base form)

Examples

  • The manager insisted that all employees attend the safety training.

Menecer bütün işçilərin təhlükəsizlik təlimində iştirak etməsini təkidlə tələb etdi.

    passiv subjunktiv: be verified

  • Should you require further information, do not hesitate to contact me.

Əlavə məlumat lazım olsa, mənimlə əlaqə saxlamaqdan çəkinməyin.

Should + subject + base verb

Had + subject + past participle
